Default Tire size VS Tire Weight

A.
I am running 36" Iroks on weld on BeadLocks They weigh in at 114 Lbs. (had them on the scale today).

B.
I am looking at running 39.5" Iroks on non BeadLock aluminum wheels. Tire weight 76lbs wheel weight 15-20 lbs estimated weight 91-96 lbs.

Which one would be harder on the axles? A or B ?

The unsprung weight of the heavier combo is meaningless and you are only talking about 100 pounds total. If anything, it adds to lowering your COG. You can do your own inertia calcs.

The larger lever arm (tire radius) is harder on all of your driveline and will effect your power for acceleration and power.

Depending on backspacing, whichever is further out will effect your wheel bearings and knuckles.

The taller tires will raise your COg but look much more cool.

All of that makes perfect sense to me. I was having trouble getting high centered on a lot of Rox this past weekend. I'm thinking a larger tire might help me out.

the difference in the actual tire height is only 2.7", so the lever applying leverage would only be 1.35" longer. its hard for me to think that it would be applying that much more leverage on to my axle shaft.

but eventually, one more straw breaks the camel's back.

Its going to be something like 10% or so more leverage, if you were on something like a draw strip.

You can't really back it up with real world data, but I suspect that the larger, longer footprint offroad increase the available traction above what the 36 offers, so you have more traction, then that traction acts 10% harder, it all adds up.

The lighter weight will help offset the extra leverage slightly, but the taller tires will still be harder on your drivetrain and steering.

I'm still behind the larger tires. Just take into consideration the eventuality that you might break more axleshafts.

If you're like me, you break them once, and then never want to have to fix it again... I went tons. You might still want to consider budgeting for chromo as an eventuality when it does happen.

No it won't. The lighter weight would only make a difference when inertia (wheel spin) comes in to play. I've seen plenty of axle shafts snap at very low rpm.

Stock D44 shafts are very vulnerable with a 39" tire. I managed to break them quite easily with 35's.
