ZJ vs XJ

Out of curiosity what is your opinion on why there are many more XJ mods and modified than there are ZJ's. what are the difference other than leaf sprung rear vs coil sprung. and why wouldnt I want coil sprung?

trying to decide if I want to get ride of my ZJ and get a commuter and a XJ to tinker with or keep the ZJ.

I like the platform. Small rig with a V8. That is exactly my style. (MORE SKINNY PEDAL!)

Thoughts?

XJ's are cheaper to purchase, and originally had better aftermarket?

Seems like there is a lot out there for your zj already.

If you keep the zj, would you still get a commuter to allow you to tinker with it more than if it is a dd? To me, it just comes down to personal preference. I don't think one is particularly cheaper than the other.

I really like V-8's and HP. YUP, small man syndrome.

I was telling the wife yesterday I REALLY liked my K20 and 30. and I really like my dads 76 f-250 with the 460 in it. BUT, hated the lack of heat and AC. my ZJ is very nice old lady owned. ac and heat work GREAT.

I should get a commuter if I stay out in the country. BUT, we may need to rent a place for a year or two while we are looking for a house to buy. and I think if we do that we can rent about 4 miles from my work (assuming I get offered the job) and 6 miles from the college where I am taking class's (starting tomorrow).

if thats the case no need for a commuter right now. if the jeep is down I will just steal the wifes truck that day. But, dont want to do that to often. So a commuter is probably realistic either way.

was just thinking finance wise for what my ZJ is worth I could get a commuter and a XJ. just dont know if I will be happy with an XJ. The ZJ has more power and luxuries and not sure I am happy with that. maybe if I lift it and start doing things to it?

I feel my old lady's xj has plenty of power, even when we jumped up to 265/75/16's. Those 4.0L's are torquey bitches

This. Plus if you really need more power, its easy to stroke a 4.0 and squeeze a few more ponies out.

XJs are more plentiful, dirt cheap, and almost all the same(with a good set of equipment of the 4.0 AW4, HP30, 29 spline 8.25), so a good platform to build within reason without swapping any parts.

ZJs are less common, more expensive, have more electrical issues, weigh 700-800lbs more, and have poor rear axles. The V8s is likely going to get you an aluminum dana 44a.

Screw you guys I like my lifted zj. Nothing like those cushy leather seats when on the trail. Mine only has the 4.0 but I love it

Change a water pump on a xj compared to a zj and report back
The xj was never designed for an i6 it was designed for the 2.8 v6

Regret selling my 85 4cy 5 speed xj at times. Not a lick of electronics and not enough power to break with the welded rear and waggy front sporting 28" tsl's. Easy to work on and parts were dirt cheap.
A ZJ just seems more "family" friendly. It is something that you don't really wheel hard because you drive it during the week. An XJ on the other hand if you bash up a fender or a hood you can find one the same night and shoot it later in the week without anyone giving it a second thought.

If you are a bigger guy the ZJ has way more room inside. The XJ, everybody and there mother makes shit for them.

The biggest difference I notice is that I pass 25 lifted XJs a day and hardly ever see lifted ZJs. Except for mine.

I was looking for a clean xj for about the last month and couldnt find one unless they wanted 5000 for it. Bought a super clean loaded zj this morning and really like it. Definetly alot nicer on the inside then an xj.already looking for lifts and what not

ive had 3 Xj's and one Zj with the 4.0....i honestly like the Xj > Zj...As stated Zj's have electrical problems, most with the weak rear end (D35) and the transmissions in them are also somewhat shitty compared to the AW4..i think what it comes down to is what you're plans are. if your going to mod it, lift it, wheel it and will be buying aftermarket parts id say Xj. But on the other hand my 4.0 Zj was a solid platform and i loved it.

Every one i looked at was either super nice and 5k or more. Or it was $1500 and the rockers were gone along with the floor with 250,000 miles. Couldnt find one i liked in the middle.

not real sure where to go with this one.

kinda leaning towards selling and getting a 1500-2k XJ, and a 1500-2k beater to go to work and school and such. I want to go up to probably 33's and play but still have some driveability to be able to drive it up north and play. like gaylord/traverse city for snowboarding etc. may pull two sleds on a snowmobile trailer (then again we have the wifes 2500 suburban to)
