Default Auto Registration and Insurance Papers

As I was putting new insurance papers in my vehicles today, a thought crossed my mind.

Why do I need hard copy of these documents, can I just store them on my phone?

1) When requested, would it be legal or accepted by the officer?

2) Would this open my device to all kinds of things I might not expect? Like search or seizure of my device?

3) Google and Apple both have a "passport/ digital wallet" function, would that mitigate some of the risks?

Thoughts?

I often wonder this as well. It would seem a PDF version on my cell phone should be just as good as a paper copy printed from that same PDF version.

But, I guess having them in the glove box would still be best for those rare occasions you forget your cell phone or somebody else is driving your vehicle.

I can't remember the insurance company at the moment, but I saw a commercial with someone having copies on their smartphone. So it must be quite possible to do this with no problems. Unless your phone pukes on you and don't have a hard copy, you should be all set.

Why the hell do you guys leave this in your ride? I had my truck stolen once at the palace during a concert and since then I never leave them in my glove box. I had no idea of my plate number so they could send it out to other squad cars. Three days later the fine people at the Pontiac police department called and said that they had found my truck.

I know my plate numbers from memory, but you do raise an interesting point.

I think it is giceo is it not?

Intresting points about having your tuff in your car. I am not sure myself. Since I am the only one that drives it I keep it with me.

I wouldn't count on the cop accepting a digital cert.

Yes, they accept any form of "proof" you provide. They can verify said proof if they want by calling the company that it was issued by.

By the way, the company that advertises the smartphone "proof" is GEICO because it's that stupid Pig one.

Unless you get pulled over by a dick cop.

My son got a ticket for no proof of insurance- even though he had paper proof printed out by the agent. His 'card' had not arrived in the mail. Cop said the agent's printout looked 'fake'.

It seems to me like the funniest commercials on tv are insurance ones. But, they do get annoying after a while.

Dick Cops (about 70% of local and 90% of state cops) think that what they say or think is law, so there is no getting around getting a ticket, but it will go away once you stop in the court and tell them you had insurance proof but the cop wouldn't take it.

My buddy and I were going to pick up a car with a tow dolly. Got pulled over because the tow dolly had no plate. Told the cop that it is considered a "coupling device" and the sec. of state won't provide a plate for it. I even showed him the STATE POLICE website where it says that tow dollies are coupling devices and do not have plates nor registrations, but he said he had never heard of that and still gave my buddy a ticket. After going to court it got dismissed, but seriously, when did the law become what cops think it is and not what it is?

Yup, you can get the ticket thrown out, but you still have to take time to go.
