Pull it, send it out to be rebuilt, make sure to get improved casting head, re install. That's what id do, these are good motors after the head issue is resolved. Just my .o2

I've picked up clean motors for $2-300. If you have a clean body, its worth looking for a decent motor. Cherokees aren't worth that much parted out.

I had the same problem with my engine a couple years ago. I took the Pistons from a blown motor and put them into another motor with broken pistons zero machine work was Done and the motor Is running fine for the last 2 years and does not smoke. I also put main bearings and lifters in while I have the motor taken apart.

4.0 common broke pistons. Had to have mine rebuilt for it. Sounded like a rod knock but just a broke piston.

pistons, and gaskets are cheap.
look at the timing chain, see if it needs one.
rod and main bearings.
hone it lightly, mabey rings?
water pump, and oil pump while its apart?
all cheap and easy stuff.

honestly, if youre not gonna beat on it, and just keep it a dd, if the rod knock isnt terrible, dont bother with it, my 94 zj (4.0) had a rod knock for around a year, still had it when i sold it to a friend, and she still drives it to this day, if its not to bad, wouldnt bother with it, the 4.0's last forever, like i said, just dont ream on it.
