Default Raspberry Pi Video Game Emulator Box

I came across this article on Lifehacker to build an emulation box and decided to go forward with it. I've always wanted to build something like this, but I'm not a computer guy as far as building them goes and I like how small/portable this one is and how it's already all together.

I went ahead and ordered a kit with the raspberry pi, case, power cord, SD card, and HDMI cord. I also ordered a couple USB SNES style controllers.

It looks as though it should be pretty straightforward. Install the operating systems, emulators, and roms on the SD card, put it all together and install the card.

Anybody ever done anything like this?

I liked video games when I was a kid, but I just don't have the patience for the newer more complicated ones anymore.

I have a shit load of N64 games and a rom system on my PC. Haven't played them in years but its fun to get nostalgic with a few friends and some original Mario Kart.

You can really play ROMs using Emulators on pretty much any PC. N64, PS1, and older systems all worked fine, but PS2 and newer would be laggy and made them unplayable when I tried to. Not sure if anything has changed though, since I haven't tried that in years either.

Had a MAME box about 5 years ago, unfortunately it was built in one of those 'cube' boxes and when the power supply took a shit I couldn't get a new one to fit.

I am thinking about doing the rasberry pi thing for an emulator in an old arcade cabinet I have, mostly looking to run the older games like Tempest and others from that era.

Emulators are good for low resolution graphics, but stink at anything more 'realistic' looking.

I've played a gb/gba emulator on my phones for the past 2 years.

Interesting ideas/concepts. I just installed a PS one emulator on my desktop because I've been craving some Tomba/Tomba 2

Yeah, I'm going for something less cluttered. This thing is tiny and will fit under the tv and I can transport it anywhere. I would like to do Playstation Games on it, but it's not necessary.

Sweet! Pawn shops are practically giving away Wii's.

to hack the wii, do you still have to have the zelda game or is there a work around for that yet?

Reading the homebrew FAQ's, seems that all you need is the hackmii installer.

I can't speak to the video game aspect of things, but I use a RPi as my media center box running XBMC. Setting up the SD card is the "hardest" part, and that's quite easy.

One bit of advice, be sure the HDMI cable is fully inserted. It's easy to bump it out just enough for things not to work.

I want to do a cocktail style arcade table mame cabinet. I wanted the true arcade roms to use with coin mech. It got pretty expensive and took a lot of space so im put the project on holt until I get a bigger house.
