I am sure you could gut 200# worth of crap out of the tj to get back to your GCVWR. I think it would pull nicer on a dolly than flat towing. I would pull the rear shaft rent a dolly and hit the road.

The pulling part itself shouldn't be too bad. I flat towed my CJ5 behind a couple smaller things, and flat towed my CJ3a behind my lifted XJ, which is the same weight as a TJ, but little extra wheelbase.

Where I ran into problems was the stuff due to flat towing. The CJ3a had issues with brakes dragging, and with the steering not wanting to recenter after turns. That kind of stuff can be a bit hard to handle with the small tow vehicle. Its the what-if's.. those things that seem to go wrong. Especially if you wheel it, and then there's an issue when you try to drag it back. (Say you break some teeth on the ring and pinion, or damage wheel bearings, etc... you can't flat tow that back home)

That can be lessened by a tow dolly, since you can at least get one set of tires off the ground. Its rare to bust the thing so bad that both axles can't turn.

From my personal experience I wouldn't recommend it. I flat towed mt wife's CJ5 behind my LJ and it was a nightmare. Couldnt go over 55. Got pushed off the freeway 10 times and through 2 intersections by the CJ. Should have brought my Brake Buddy and auxiliary lighting. CJ's battery was only good for 2 hours for emergancy flashers. I would trailer it with the right tow vehicle.

Pulled the TJ with mid 2000's Durango's on 2 seperate occasions. Not bad except stopping. Took a longer distance and effort to stop. (both Durangos had trailer tow setup)

Tested flat towing my TJ behind my Commander. Nope, never again. Slow to moderate speeds were fine. Straight on the highway was fine. 55mph on I696 at the Ryan/Dequindre curves were scary. Back end of the Commander was getting pushed into the next lane. It is a different rear push than you get from say, a boat trailer. Much harder to control. Also, braking was not good, and yes, the Commander was also set up for towing.

I personally might consider trying again if I had a brake buddy in the vehicle I was towing. At least then you can use it to control your back end a bit.

But, you can all do whatever you want. I just hope I am not in the way when something does go wrong.

Oh, and I do not have a tow rig or trailer these days. And before I did I drove my Jeeps up north and wheeled accordingly.

Personally, I would sell the CJ2A to someone with a truck and trailer,

I just so happen to have a truck and a trailer, please PM my a price.

We have not heard from the OP in a while. He must have spun out of control crashing into a ditch and died a fiery death while trying to tow his CJ2A.

Sorry, I have been recovering in the hospital after rolling my jeep. I tried to pull it all up north and everything was going great but then I decided to stop by my buddies place and hook his bass boat up to the back of the cj2a. Unfortunately, I rolled my TJ/CJ2A/Bass Boat caravan on my way up 75.

Was there a dune flag on each vehicle and the boat?

I can say from experience, DON'T DO IT! Please do not attempt to tow another vehicle with a swb TJ.

The tow dolly stayed attached but snapped off at the tongue. On the way to silver lake it slipped on gravel in a construction zone and went outta control.

You can tow a CJ with a TJ as long as you aren't getting a BJ
