Default Broken Compressor Query

60 Gallon, Single Stage, 7.0 HP vertical compressor.

For the last few years it has started to blow out the rear oil seal, i'm guessing rings are shot and pressure is starting to build up in crankcase.
I "fixed" it for awhile by drilling a small relief hole in the seal it self letting it vent the pressure, that is no longer working lol

So, $450 for a direct replacement pump, or $600 for an entire new compressor. Everything else on it still works great.

I did buy a universal replacement pump, but between the different fitment, having to find pulleys to work with the motor etc, i'm going to spend $500 in parts/time.

My thoughts too, if it is a brand name, and the bearings are good, I would try to hone and re-ring it at the least. I know older Craftsman's you can get parts for, I would think the other brand names you could too.

some parts are, some are backordered indefinitely.

Looking at base price list, for rings, other wear items and gaskets it'll be $125-$150 in parts plus shipping, plus my time to tear it down and rebuild.

and then if it's a bent crank, bad piston etc, should just have replaced it to begin with.

That brand new $600 compressor will only last about half as long as your old one did.

I would at least tear the pump down first to see if it is rebuildable.

So went and ordered a new pump for my old compressor.

Tire old pump down, failed rings on one cylinder and warped head.

Got the new pump, quite impressed.
Came with pulley attached and included pulley for motor (didn't need was same as old) all air like fittings, prevent hard like from pump to tank, bottle of oil and new belt.

Wayyyyyy better design. Old was all cast aluminum design. IMO crappy mainstay design and poor oil fill location and no way to tell how much was in there.
Replacement pump, cast iron. Vastly improved main deal with retainer, better oil fill location and sight glass for level. Hoping this one lasts me another 15 years at least.
