Default 88 XJ, play or pass? (Pics)

Welcome to a little game we will call, WHAT WOULD YOU DO???

Lets start with the facts:

1988 Jeep Cherokee
Pioneer trim.
Renix 4.0L
BA-10 5-speed manual trans.
NP207 case.
258k miles
Averaging 20.5 mpg. (sweet eh?)
Running 06 Wrangler feet with near new tires.
Rust free.
Drives at 80mph with no vibes.
New axle joints, brakes, fuel pump, tune up, etc.
Burns no oil, drips from rear main.
New radio. Needs muffler.
Dumb brush painted paint job to cover faded clear coat on original

Motor is all there with good hot oil pressure. Trans has worn syncro in 3rd (will grind and sometimes drop out of gear when low idle). Transfer case is great. Clutch is strong. Driven daily almost 50 miles. Temp stays steady. Heat works great, a/c not working but never tried charging. New lenses, new bulbs, new wipers (rear wiper works too). Interior pretty clean, headliner put back up. Crank windows, all glass good. Have under coated most of the underbelly recently before what looks like its first MI winter. Could use coolant flush. I'm selling myself a new car in a month and need to think through my next steps after I don't routinely drive it anymore.

1. So what is this thing worth? (I'm about $2,000 into it total)
2. Would you use this Jeep for a very mild build?
3. Would you instead consider trading it as is towards one already mildly built?

I would play. Hard.

I had an 88 Pioneer. 5 Speed BA-10. I miss it.

The seats had a lever that allowed them to "tilt" on a slide thingy.

Budget boost, i know a place that sells rough country locally hehe, and some 30 or 31s. Stick with what you know is a solid vehicle.

Is she worth every bit of the two grand im into it for? I'm wondering if I should cash in now, put a few more bucks together, and buy it already ready to rock

What do you think is the best setup for tow points, front and rear receiver hitches?

Honestly, I don't think you'll ever get $2000 for this thing. So suck it up and build this thing. It's solid, and a better start than any built vehicle you'll find.

I am going off what factory specs state, didn't verify by looking at it, nor would I know if it were ever overhauled in the past 25 years.

If you're lucky. I think it's a fair price. It won't sell on this crap hole of a site though.

I think it might be worth $2000 to the right person. RUST FREE is big on an old Jeep like that. The 5 speed is a bonus to some. I would sell / trade it for an already built one. If you wanted to build a rig, this would be a good start since the body is so solid. But that is where I don't like it, you wont want to hurt tn wheelin if you build on such a nice body. I say get rid of it and buy one ready-ish to go with dents! BTW, I used to wheel manuals, not I wont go back. Auto all the way baby!!

My reaction was to keep it up, maintain it well, then sell it in good shape looking good, then use those funds plus a bit more and buy one done.

Curious, why don't you like to wheel with a manual?

In the rocks I would have to use a hand throttle when in precarious situations. Brake, gas and clutch all at once. Auto is just easier and is a little simpler / quicker to throw it in reverse (or drive) in an emergency. I know some prefer manual, but not me.

Not that 5 speed though, I'm surprised it still mostly working.

I'd keep it and use it as a toy, throw some bigger than stock tires on it with a budget boost and a front locker and have some fun.

Leave it as is, DD it until someone will pay you $2k. Find one that has been smacked around a bit for a trail rig.

Leave it as is for a DD or cruise it. It is an 88. If anything upgrade the axles to a newer set to get rid of the d35 and front disco d30
