I know you didn't. However if anyone should be known for cowboy movies it should be Clint. Not that hack of a putz John Wayne. I've always thought he was a horrible actor.

Clint Eastwood
Robert Duvall
Jeff Bridges
Tom Hanks
Kurt Russell

and, although he's had fewer roles than he should because liberal Hollywood types keep pissing on his career (and those of other, outspoken conservatives):

Tom Selleck

Eastwood is the closest yet no one has as long nor varied a movie role/private life history as Wayne.

but then, back in the day, hollywood studios made not only movies but their secondary effort was to create legendary personas associated with their studio brand so as to fill the seats and sell the popcorn.

Your nominees are good.
I think that actors just like singers now a lot of it is done in the studio. Some of the "new" hit singers are not that talented.
Some of the star actors aren't star's either.
Not that I have watched or listened to Justin Timberlake he seems to be like the actors of the past. Sings dances and acts, funny.

Yes, you've got it right. Someone who created a persona for themselves whether real or manufactured that captures the vast majority of people's senses of what a badass is. Whenever people talk about days of old John Wayne's name comes up and their eyes glisten (that nostalgia effect).

There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread but a lot of them are older. At lunch, we were talking more along the lines of current younger actors. As in, who would kids claim years from now is the undisputed badass. And yes I'm Keeping in mind that for the most part, kids these days are idiototic pussies and will have a hard time recognizing a badass. For example, suggesting Channing Tatum would solicit an instant bitch slap. No self respecting badass would do a scene like in "This Is The End" where they offer up their ass to Danny McBride.

I agree with Tom Selleck.

Clint too but a little too close to the same age as John Wayne.

When I think of John Wayne, there is more to it than "tough guy". Steven Segal & Jon Claude VanDam are "tough guys" but aren't in the same class as John Wayne.

When I think of John Wayne, what sticks out stronger is that he is an "American" through and through. He wasn't a great actor, but his movies were great because he was always a man that had morals and represented what we all feel helped to tame the West. You could always respect him.

With that, Chuck Norris comes to mind.

If we aren't talking about westerns more just the people who will become classics I think pretty much every movie I have seen with Denzel Washington has been awesome. He can play a lot of different role types.
I also think that Bruce Willis is becoming timeless. Robert Deniro has played some gray roles also. Clint Eastwood is an easy choice too.
There are a lot of choices now because the entertainment industry is larger than back when John Wayne was acting, not that he doesn't deserve the respect he has earned.
