how to tell if center yoke assembly is shot in front driveshaft

My U joints needed replacing along with front pinion seal on my xj. In the process of taking the double cardan joint apart (1st one on my own) i relised that the center yoke ass. could very well be needing replaced as well but im not to sure...is it supposed to have to resistance to it?

Mine hummed like a U-joint going bad when I replaced it. thought it was U-joint at first, but the humming didn't stop when I replaced it. I rebuilt the double cardan and the noise went away. FWIW you can just replace the ball. That's what I did.

Advanced auto has ordered several for me.

Bad centering ball sounds like a metal playing card in bicycle spokes.
