Very true!
It was just a little comment that I said and I wasn't tryin to be a dick while saying it but I said it anyways!
My father and uncle were drafted. Both were drafted in army and my dad was a little upset I went for Marines.

And really ladies?!
Your gonna get your panties in a bunch over someone's little comment?!
:-)
I thought you had to have some thick skin to be a member here?

Oh and fvck you to who said I don't have respect to civilians! I have many friends that aren't vets that I consider brothers!

Also yes I do hold vets on a higher level and civilians should to!!
We served our fvckin country so u can sit at home. No matter what, no civilian will no the true brotherhood that is grown in the military.
I don't hold myself above non vets but I am not in the same class.
That^ being said if u knew me personally u wouldn't be callin me a dick. So suck it up and move on!
Thread jack over!!

First, thank you to those that have served.

My dad was a marine who joined right at the end of WWII. I don't know much about his stint, he never talks about it. But he was pretty adamant that my brother and I not join. Top that with I got out of high school right after Vietnam and unfortunately, there wasn't the national pride (regarding the military) that there is today. So, I never joined up.

To this day I wish I had joined. It's my #1 regret when considering what I would have done differently with my life.

SS,
You said something that surprised me. The comment about appreciating civilians because they provided you with the resources you needed to serve. I never thought that any military actually considered that as a value. That says something to me.....

I haven't heard any good excuses but it always pissed me off when we were on our way to the Gulf and a handful of pu$$ies would start crying "I didn't sign up for this, I joined for the GI bill.".

I'm workin Chicago for Emergency traffic patrol. A dept of IDOT. You have to be a vet and have a class A CDL with any 2 endorsements. If u don't have those requirements they won't even let u fill out a app.
Go down town to the Stevenson building and on the 3rd floor is central management systems CMS they do all the hiring for the state. Apply for all the positions that you qualify for then just forget about it. Don't put ur hopes up. Then if you actually get a call, you are pretty much hired!!
They didn't call me till a year later!
It's a amazing job

No offense to the people that did but
One thing that really Erks me are the people that all enlisted just cause of 9/11. Shit I enlisted cause I wanted to serve my country out of my heart not for a disaster. I was on the USkearsarge a part of the 24meu when 9/11 was happening. Talk about shitting bricks. We left port in Croatia and stood by at red alert incase they wanted to send us in right away.
We were watching the TVs in disbelief.

Small world!

cmetzg03 - I was in the 26th MEU as well. I went out on the two previous floats right before September 11th (aboard the Saipan and then the Kearsarge before that) and was scheduled to get out in July of 2011 but got out a slightly earlier out to go back to college. I had a lot of friends who were still in the MEU and deployed after 9/11.

I was on the IRR for a few years after that and then got recalled to active duty in 2003.

Were either of you with the Command Elements for the 24th or 26th MEU. Who knows... we may have been working in the same building at any given time.

My parents used to always send me boxes of cereal as well when I was deployed. I've always loved my Count Chocula and it's surprisingly hard to find aboard a ship or in Kosovo. Thankfully, my parents never stuffed any pron into the boxes... that would have been more than a bit awkward.

How about the worst care package you ever got?

I have a sweet tooth and my parents, sisters, aunts, friends, etc. would always send me boxes with big packages of candy in them. One time my dad sent me about 5 pounds of black licorice. Yuck! I couldn't give that stuff away. I think I ended up throwing it overboard 13 years later, and it's probably still floating around the Mediterranean Sea.

There were to many terrible care packages.lol. It was like thanks for the effort, but I don't need another 30 mini bottles of mouthwash and toothpaste. I always asked for snack type stuff and ravioli. Made sure to ask for extra so I could give some to my crew.
