Default 88 Comanche Cheif

A friend of mine recommended me to start a build thread. So here goes nothing!

I recently picked up a 1988 Jeep Comanche Chief in Febuary from and older lady somewhat local to me. When I went and looked at it the she told me that all that it needed was a brake line. I heard it run for a bout 30 seconds after she had jumped the dead battery and wouldn't run after that. She had told me its always started and she parked it when she blew the brake line and its been sitting for months since. It seemed pretty low on gas so I figured that would be it. I later that week I picked it up and took it home



The uni-frame looks to be very solid and looks like a nice candidate for a clean street Jeep.

Well, first things first I dump it into the garage to fix the brake line and figured out why it wasn't running. Front brake lines were rotted at the fitting before the flex line, no big deal. She had told me she put some fresh fuel in it before I picked it up so I figured maybe the fuel filter was collged. Checked fuel pressure and had nothing but air, but I could hear the pump prime. I pulled the filter off and put some gas in the tank and sprayed fuel all over the ground. Quickly installed a new fuel filter, hoses, and clamps and fired it up. WAHOO IT'S ALIVE and running pretty good, besides a little noisy water pump. Well all that gas in the tank decided to leak all over the floor while I was running it and of course I wasn't paying attention. Well fuel tank must have just started to rot out so I had to replace that. Had to replace the noisy water pump and noticed the radiator had seen better days, along with the valve cover gasket. Well since I was there I got an new thermostat housing and did the closed to open cooling conversion.




After all that I was on my first maiden voyage. Got a lil shaky after 55 but the wheels are pretty scaly with rust. But overall not too shabby, and she does a mean one wheeler peeler.




Initially I just wanted to do a 6.5" inch long arm front lift and spring over 8.8 in the rear, 4:56 gears, and some 35" tires. This would a pretty basic street cruiser off-road toy in my eyes.

Well shit, I found me a pair of Dodge dana 60s, with 37 inch Interco Super Swamper M16 mounted on some H2 wheels. So the intial plan has drastically changed.





So now I'm on the path of collecting parks for the one ton build. Well look what came across my path now. I had come across 4) 2.5 FOA coilovers w/ resiviors 2) 14 inch and 2) 16 inch. Considering the price I found them for was gonna be cheaper than coil spring set up, another game changer.



Well I happened to come across another pair of axles. 79 Ford Kingpin Dana 60 and a 14-bolt both with 4.56 gears. So then I decided to ditch the Dodge Dana 60's and go for the more sought after combo vs bottom of the barrel IMO.



Started cleaning up the 14-bolt and cutting 4 perches of the thing, damn previous owner. Scored some disc conversion brackets with the axle so I ended up getting that out of the way, along with new bearings and seals.



Still on my path of collecting parts I have gotten a Lockrite locker for the 14 Bolt, T&M Fab MJ full frame stiffeners, and heim joints from Ruff Stuff. Damn those 1.25" are BEEF!



Well, I figured I wasn't going to waste my time with a 37-inch tires, being the 14 bolt is such a fatty. I was planning on going with some 40's, maybe Maxxis Creepy Crawlers. Untill I came across the set 41" Iroks, ok 41's it is!

Should be good with a budget boost and some trimming, right!



That is where my current build stands. I will be continuing the build as I get parts and soon I will be starting as my winter project. Stay tuned!

I like it, I've always wanted to build up a commanche. I've heard if you're anywhere North of 6'0" though that they can be rather uncomfortable to sit in. I like the build though, it's looking great.

Pretty comfy actually. I'd say it's a bit larger than a s10 single cab but, I'm not 6' so I would imagine any taller it would be a bit uncomfortable

I'm north of 6'1,175 and drove my buddy's pretty easily when he had his. Even had 3 pedals to work around instead of two. Following this too as I feel like any jeep geek has a soft spot for these things

So the past couple weeks I've been focusing on the front axle. (79 Ford kingpin dana 60) Being that i got these axles in pieces the whole thing is a puzzle to me and it looks to me all of the pieces are there and then some. I started by stripping down the king pins and races and installing new while doing some clean up to the C's
Here's an nice king pin removal trick I picked up off line, talk about easy




And degreasing and basting knuckle and such


Luckily the previous owner gave me oddles of parts with these axle, just so happened there was a complete KP rebuild kit minus the pins(no big deal) and some EORP high steer arms. I had to dig deep on these and found they are most likely Extreme Off Road Parts/ Northwest 4x4 high steer billet arms. Anybody have and insight on this company? They are not drilled and there is no difference in them other than the angle the ear sits at. Here's how I set them up, please correct me if they are wrong.



Setting these axles up really got me thinking about all the upgrades and $1000's of dollars I could spend up front steering components. Reid knuckle, brass bushings, the works. The stock knuckles are not permanent by anymeans, they are just to get the ball rolling on mock up.
