Default Marco

Introducing Marco, a 2000 XJ for my son. We picked it up in Florida last week on spring break. It has 211,xxx miles on it, supposedly with a lower mile engine swap. The name comes from the seller - a Hispanic gentleman we bought it from. He was pretty cool. He's got the jeep bug too, had another XJ & a YJ.

I looked it over, bought some fluids, spare belt, checked tire pressures, etc and drove it down there a couple of days. It would shut off when warm so we threw a new CPS on it and fixed a couple of bad grounds. Seemed to cure it. So, Saturday my wife & son jumped in and followed me all the way to Michigan. 1100 miles without a hitch. Even pulled 19 mpg. Only flaw was no heat. I gotta give my wife credit for driving 17 hours with no heat and hardly complaining at all.

Build plan-front end rebuild, 2.5" lift, 30-31" tires, fab bumpers, etc.

Take a look at rough country's new stuff if you are building this budget minded. They apparently moved to a different manufacturer for their parts for better quality.
I just helped install a rough country long arm kit on a WJ and it seemed like everything was very good quality for the price. Even the shocks were badass and built by gabriel. Lol

Thanks. I showed him the pic and he said "I think I can build that, don't want to spend the money". I think their price is reasonable but I don't want to discourage him building or watching his money. He's about half done & it's coming out pretty decent.

Been a while with no update. We've been working at getting it road worthy. Tune up, etc. The stock suspension was shot so we saved up and got the Iron Rock Off-road 3" kit and new steering components. Nobody needs a play by play on another xj lift. We just need to go through final torquing of fasteners and alignment and it will be good to go. Kid wanted an intake so we made one up too.

The best part has been doing it all together. The kid has been doing a good share of it himself and asking a lot of questions.

Fair warning in case your kid decides to play in mud/water. The factory XJ airbox does a surprisingly good job keeping water out. That setup likely won't. The radiator and headlights will push some away, but not all.

Thanks and understood on the water. We had a good discussion of hydrolocking an engine as we were fabbing the intake. That does not mean a teenager will not still make a bad choice .

Marco put up a little fight tonight. Someone must have installed the engine drain plug with a 3' pipe while simultaneously rounding it off. Had to weld a nut on it to get it out.

The oil filter was so tight I had to take a chisel and drive it around the flange to break it loose. More teaching I guess.

Everything torqued to spec. Just need get a new drain plug, a little bumper trimming & an alignment.
