Default Boating in Cedarville in the U.P.

I have a trip schedule to boat up in the U.P. and the house we are staying at is in Cedarville in the Les Cheneaux area which is slightly northwest of Mackinack Island. I will be taking my 18' open bow. Has anyone boated there before?

There are many channels to boat in up there, are there any to avoid? Anything in particular of interest right there?

Are you fishing or sight seeing? Do you have a GPS with nautical maps? The islands and channels all look alike, so hopefully you have GPS. All the channels have bouy markers, so no issues there until you get lost...

When are you going?

We will be mostly sight seeing. I do not have a GPS with nautical maps. I have never been on big enough water to need one but I will look into one. I wonder if there are any smartphone apps you can download maps to use out of cell service area?

We are going the second weekend in August.

Also I do not know where to find charts online. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I tried looking for apps on my android, but found nothing suitable. I fish and hunt ducks in the same area, just a little north of the detour, Drummond ferry. If I find any charts for that area, I will post.

You will be there for the tail end of the week long wooden boat show. Awesome.

There are some good charts, just search google images for the islands. Be sure to get a chart that has all the bouy locations. That will help you navigate without a GPS that has marine maps. Do you atleast have a normal GPS that could help you if you get turned around between islands?

I use to do a lot of fishing with my father-inlaw in the Straits of Mac, and Detour Village area, great fishing infront of the grand hotel on Mac Island, but dont get caught over there or near the tour boat passage/dockage, cause they dock every 20 min. BIG WAVES, My dad use to say, " the light houses are your out of bounds area", in a boat smaller than 20 feet, same goes true for Detour Village at there light house. warning- Watch the wind can change in a hurry, In a 18 foot boat, you dont want to be out there when the winds come up.

oh- and dont play with the big boats, like freighters, they dont stop fast

Cell coverage could be sketchy as well. A decent chart and GPS with "track back" is a great idea.

I use Seaclear II and Raster charts on a netbook with a USB GPS antenna.

I have a 10" Android tablet and I found this app. There was another one i was looking at as well but I forget the name.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....mariner&hl=en

I am going to download and give that a try.

I do have a standalone land GPS to use as backup.
I also found some PDF's of charts of a reduced scale NOAA charts. It's 21 pages and I am going to print out the areas I need.

I just found online the wooden boat show. It looks pretty cool, I may have to check it out.
