Default Reliability of a 2006 passat

looking at the 3.6 6 cylinder as commuter vs my supercrew f-150. I know the 2.0 4 banger turbo looks to be a complete turd in terms of reliability but it looks like the 6 cylinder is better?

Anyone have experience with the 6 cyl automotion cars?

Or

Any other suggestions for a decent car under 10k? Not particular really but it has to look at least half way decent. I don't have to love it for 10k but it cant be hideous. Mileage isn't really a huge concern but Id like to stay under 120k closer to or below 100 the better. Looking for about 06 or newer.

Maybe a fusion?

The problem is it is a VW.

If I were to only have a car I might just get a Subaru.

I have had very few serious issues with my 03 Jetta, but it is a TDI. I can't speak to the gas engines
I had to replace the manual trans at 310,000 miles due to the differential bearings going out. had to put a clutch in at 105,000. obviously due to the woman that owned it before me, as I have about 210,000 on the one I put in. I have done plenty of normal maint items brakes, wheel bearings, shocks and such. but the car has been fantastic for me!

Water cooled vws are a joke. Always have been always will be.
If you like huge repair bills, stupid expsensive parts, and spending massive amounts of time it the waiting room of the dealer buy one.

I worked at a vw shop for around 15 years and have nothing good to say about them.

Reliability of a older used vehicle depends on the previous owner and how well they maintained it. The stories of my friend had this happen with such and such a car aren't super accurate in determining reliability.

Maybe ask an independent shop that specializes in European vehicles. I know there are a few around the Metro-Detroit area, and I'm sure there are ones out in GR.

Other than that, my two cents is that the large majority of foreign cars require expensive parts and sometimes more special tools to perform the repairs. Get a domestic car that had high production numbers with a good reliability reputation. Then, if anything does break because something always will, parts and/or labor won't be as expensive. Even a Civic or Accord would be a decent choice, but some of the parts for those cars are still more expensive than a comparable domestic.

Pretty sure he's looking for advice from people who actually bought theirs instead of "liberating" them in the middle of the night from their owners with a screwdriver and wire cutters.

I've always had good luck with VeeDubs but that's just me. I can fix my own stuff though so that helps out. I'm more of an Audi man now but I wouldn't turn my nose up at a good condition Mercedes. I'd love another 300 SD.

Ive been a vw tech for 12 years and we rarely see the newer vr6 passats with engine
problems, the earlier 3.6 vr6 had an oil pump bolt issue where they used to weak of
bolt and it would break causing the pump not work. I would check the vehicle history
for previous repairs. But all in all they are a fun car to drive.

Thank all, I'm thinking the Passat while as someone said fun to drive isn't going to be the one. I'm sort of leaning towards a 2010ish fusion.... or the '05 530i that drives like new with 96k on it because its sweet.

For a auto enthusiest the vw always has something to offer. They handle well and aftermarket support is good.
I have just seen too many people with no machanical knowledge get in way over their head because someone told them to buy a vw.
I have seen too many broken timing belts, bent valves and empty $500 resonators to have any love for them. Maybe the newest ones are more reliable but Im sure the price for parts is just as scary.
I do love a aircooled vw though.

We owned a 2008 Beetle for a little over a year - nice and tight, fun to drive (2.0T), but as someone else mentioned stupid expensive to get parts for. And unfortunately we seemed to need a lot of parts for a low-mileage (46k when we bought it in 2011) vehicle that had never seen a winter before it came to our driveway.
