Read that earlier... Apparently multiple witnesses saw an object streak towards the plane leaving a contrail of smoke and the explosion originated from the outside of the plane.

Quite the interesting story.

I remember hearing that their were people who saw an object streak towards the plane

Why does this take 17 years to decide it might have been a missile?

It didn't, it was talked about quite extensively back when it happened. But as happens now, the media and the gubament push that as conspiracy theory nut jobs talking. They tell their investigators to keep their mouths shut or loose their job and make something up. (as the retired investigators say in the article is what happened) I actually think I remember seeing some of the early media reports mentioning missiles and maybe a video of contrail?
been a long time. We need more old farts with better memories than mine to chime in. I think I remember media reports saying there was a particular navy ship in that general area the contrail was seen coming from, but I do not remember what ship.

SPECUALTION: if it was a training missile fire, perhaps no warhead and therefore no traces of explosion on the airliner??

There were lots of reports of this when it happened. The way I remember it, It was first reported as being hit by a missile or multiple missiles. The reports were somewhat quickly changed to an official "no missile" status, but everyone still thought otherwise. Then there were a bunch of botched operations with all kinds of different reports and everyone calling everyone else liars or fools. It was eventually settled that even though the evidence pointed elsewhere, it must have just blown up on its own, since the pieces needed to prove the missile theory were "never found", and that would be too hard to explain.

I have no idea what happened, I wasn't there. But all the people who were there or directly involved said it was a missile or rocket explosion, up until they were told to STFU.

That's how I remember it anyway.

It was swamp gas reflecting off the light from Venus and a weather balloon.

Now if you will just focus your attention here for your eye test...

I was watching CBS Morning News, and they stated that the reason that explosive residue was found on the outside of the plane was because that plan had been part of a training for dogs a couple of days before.
