The long term target of that project goes well beyond just driving test vehicles... I wouldn't be worried about job loss. The headcount working on a project like that (and the subset of all parts involved by suppliers, etc) goes way beyond replacing one driver....

But will the drivers be trained to do something else or are they just shitcanned?

Right, who do people thing designed and engineered the whole system? And if you take a minute and look around next time you're on the road (at least here in Michigan) there are M plates all over the road all the time for testing.

Just like the line worker, the driver will get shit canned, sit at home and cry about how there are no jeeeerbs, some punk kid will play video games all through college and graduate with a degree in electrical engineering with a focus on electromechanical technologies, he'll replace said driver and join a team of 5 smart engineerings, half of them from india to design testing systems like this. Meanwhile the driver won't further educate himself and will remain obsolete and will complain as he can't find another job, loses his wife and his house, calls one of those late night trucking school infomercials, drives OTR for 6 months, gets fired because he doesn't have teh smarts to operate the new gps logging system the trucking company requires, moves into a trailer off 8 mile with eminems cousin and sits around complaining about how our country is being overtaken by immigrants and remembers the good ole days.

Half the team is also Chinese.

The "smart" drivers could be retrained to do the pre/post checks and document data.

Short term, yes. And what happens after the initial engineering and dialing in is finished? Long term you better believe there will be job loss, massive job loss and your first sentence is why.

Exactly. Automation, AI, robots, whatever you want to call it is poised to take over jobs traditionally thought to be safe from automation. It is not a question of if this automation revolution will happen, but more a question of how fast it will occur and how much time will we as a society have to adjust to it. And no one knows where the replacement jobs, if any, will come from. Can't retrain for a job that does not exist.

the UAW representing test drivers at various proving grounds are going to poop all over this one although THIS IS NOTHING NEW. as i recall, Chrysler introduced some robotic piloting at Chelsea Proving grounds under the reign of site manager Sue Chiski (sp?) and i believe at least one of the site members works out there but cannot remember who.

any comments from that chap?

Chrysler did this a few years back but scratched the project due to cost. They were using a different set up though

Rediculous. Evolve or die. If driving is your only talent / hope in life then be prepared to buy a taxi. The replacement jobs will come from maintaining, improving, manufacturing, running the robots, etc. Unreal, let me guess, you are a Union member?

Problem is, there are some people who just can't 're-educate' into a tech job. High schools don't even offer shop math anymore. The entire job market can't be all engineers and health care workers.
