Default Potentially moving this summer

I am interviewing for a job in Algonac on the 29th this month. If I get the job, I will be relocating my family and myself to the Algonac area from Holland. I am originally from the thumb, near Sandusky, and my wife is originally from Macomb, so this is an ideal location for us to be back near family. I dont really know that specific area though, so I need some input from some people who do. I have three kids,(two who are in school, and one who will be in a few years) so schools are important. I also need to know nice areas to look for a house, and where to avoid.

Take that however you wish.

Booze will happen. That and pizza are usually how I pay for help with moving. Seems to make people happy.

Just a suggestion- withhold booze until AFTER the move is done.

Richmond is a nice area, not that far from Algonac. When I moved into that area about 6 years ago, we looked at a few different houses in Algonac. Its sort of an older "waterside" area, but not bad. We eventually settled on a place in Richmond, though. Nice schools, quiet, good access to 94 when/if needed and only a 40 min straight shot to Comerica.

We have since moved back to the Saginaw area (work related), but we still miss living in Richmond. Check it out.

I live right by Richmond. Grew up there. Very nice. Alto algonac has some nice areas and some very white trashy areas. Just look close to the surrounding houses near any you look at.

I've never lived there, but visited a few times and St. Clair seems to be a pretty nice town too.

Yep...St. Clair is nice too. We looked at a bunch of houses there and even put an offer in on one that fell through. Our "backup" house was in St. Clair also, when we were working the offer on the house in Richmond. Watch out for the taxes in St. Clair...they were a killer if I remember right.

I grew up out there as well (grew up in Casco and went to Anchor Bay Schools). I agree with the recommendation of looking in the Richmond area for the quicker access to I-94. Your commute to Algonac would not be bad from there.

One of my brothers had a house in Algonac for a while when his kids were little and there are indeed some trashy areas around town but even trashy areas in Algonac are pretty clean compared to what you will find when you get into the denser suburbs. And it's not somewhere I ever would be in fear of my safety or anything like that.

I have a lot of friends who live in New Baltimore and Chesterfield but besides more ammenities than Richmond and easier access to I-94 and M-59, that area never really appealed to me. I always looked at the Anchor Bay schools as being better than the Richmond schools but these days I hear nothing but bad things about the high school in particular (mostly from friends who teach there). That high school is just two big physically and the district really screwed up by building it - my best friend's mom was superintendent in the 1990s and early 2000s and quit over the boards refusal to have two smaller high schools instead of the one giant one. I would be very hesitant to send my kids there.

Anchor Bay Schools
I live on the outskirts of New Baltimore. Just enough country with a little bit of city.

I'll stop inviting you over then

Just a quick snippet of the high school.....
Yes it is huge. It's is new and beautiful.
My daughter graduates this year. She did well. She loves her school and friends.
There is a huge social class mix being the district is school of choice.
I've attended most if not all my kids school functions. Of the thousands of kids that go to the school everyone that I saw were well behaved and respectable as a kid could be.
Talent show I attended was extremely impressive.
You can see and feel the comradeship in the students.

My parents live at 26 Mile and Romeo Plank in the New Haven School District. I went to New Haven Schools for 7-10th grade before switching to Armada Schools. While New Haven has a newer Elementary and Middle school and the teachers are nice, the amount of trash students there are what ultimately made me switch schools. I attended Armada High School for 11 and 12 grade and am very happy I switched. If you end up in the Richmond, Armada, or St. Clair areas, Armada has an accelerated math and science program called the Macomb Academy of Arts and Sciences that is open to those school districts and a couple more. It is for high schoolers and you go for half a day before returning to your home school to do English, history, and the like classes. I attended the program and really enjoyed it and their approach to teaching/student learning.

That is good to read.

I'm curious - how long have your kids been in the district? I've heard that the school was particularly bad in the first few years after it was open (bad as in discipline problems, I've never heard bad things about the school or the district academically) and it's likely that the administration made some changes to take away a lot of the causes that were making the building so impersonal and facilitating those behavioral problems.

And of course, as we love bad news, those initial reports are the ones that stick with me and it's more difficult to erase them with good reports.

My kids have been in the district now for about 2.5 years. Both my kids adjusted very well midstream of transition from their old school.
As far as discipline issues goes my son mentioned once that a kid got suspended for bringing a knife to school to show it off.
My daughter says there have been several fights at school amongst the billy bad asses
In my opinion that is within the norm.
I was a little disturbed about how my daughter tells me "everyone" smokes pot and drinks at her school.
So I questioned her about her and her friends, but none of them do. So I asked how is that everyone then?

You expected them to tell you if they were?

You are getting old.
