Default RC Crawler World

Not going to bore with the details. Bottom line, not enough funds to get back in the jeepin thing just yet.

My boy is 12 and he has shown some interest in the RC car/truck world. For his birthday I am looking to get him an RC Crawler.

I have started the college level research project on Pirate4x4 and google. The choices are higher then the population of china and I'm not looking to fabricate every piece like the pirate gods.

That brings me to that question. (flame suit already on) Is there a base kit that will allow us to upgrade (when we break stuff of course) and the controller and parts could be swapped to a more advanced kit in the future.

Fire away...

The Axial SCX10 is a good kit to start with, tons of options for it out there if you wanna upgrade. Check out www.rccrawler.com too, lots of info on that forum.

I love my axial wraith. Fast enough to not get bored with. Has bright lights so you can actually drive it at night. You can upgrade parts as needed. Factory radio works well. And set up like a real crawler. 4 links, coilovers driveshafts, differentials. Plus they look cool. I put a brushless system in mine and some aluminum parts.

I have a Redcat RS10. I bought it just because it was cheap.

That being said I have not used it in over a year because I got pretty bored with it, you run out of obstacles to go over so you have to travel to find fun stuff to play with. I bought a traxxas slash 4x4 and I like that much better, its not a crawler but goes 8/10 places that my crawler would go but I can take it to the dunes or do 45 mph on the street with it.

But if you want to spend a good chunk of change, there are sweet crawler kits that are super realistic (mock dana 60's) but I am just not dedicated enough to spend the money on a bigger crawler.

Defiantly go with a Axial based crawler. They have probably the largest aftermarket support out there ! All depends on how deep your pockets are as to how crazy you want to get. Vanquish makes some killer upgrades for Axial trucks. I have seen some pictures of SCX10 trucks that are so scale looking you couldn't tell if they were real or RC.

I just sold my Recat RS10 that i got brand new and it was the biggest pile of shit out there in my opinion. Cheap price but not even worth the $150 it cost.

A while back my son had his Axial wraith on here for sale, I can ask him if he still wants to sell it. It came with a charger, battery pack, hi torque servo, and some other things I can't recall. He was looking to get around $450. if my memory serves me right and I know he spent more than that on it. He bought some package from one of the big RC Crawler vendors. He has used it just a few times as he bought it while he was off work due to a broken collar bone that had to be plated and 6 screws put in and he was bored out of his mind. He played with it for a couple times and then just gave up as it was during winter and the snow started falling. Well now he's back to work and riding his dirt bikes so the car just sits here collecting dust.

The axial rigs are set up nicely, but are pretty expensive for Rtr models. I picked up an exceed mad torque rtr @ $170. Its a lightweight but some aftermarket axial parts interchange with it.

Ok, I have my brain wrapped around the RTR axial stuff, good place to start. question 2. Batteries, it appears I need to buy these also as they are not included. 7.2, 7.4 what is the middle of the road, durable, decent power way to go.

2s lipo is pretty standard, if the esc/motor can handel it 3s lipo will get you more speed and power but with the expense of added heat. The size of the rig you get will determine the size battery you can fit. Also get a charger that has built in lipo balancing.
