my company's cost is $52/hr for engineering but we normally add a 40% margin.

When I designed for a company it was $100/hr billing. Working for someone cash on the side, I did it for $25/hr because for $50/hr it would have been a one time stint.

Edit, I was detailing on the side, not designing. Pretty easy money at the time.

I'm figuring about 50/hr, but now not whether I want to just tell him a rate, or give him a total for the project.

You're probably better off doing hourly.

You're probably not going to command $50/hr considering you just graduated.

Total for the project needs to include the guy changing his mind 25 times before agreeing to you originally proposed. Hourly usually makes them think about it before asking you to change it. My $.02

On a side note, I know a shit ton of people with business cards that say "engineer" that draw using 3d systems and whatnot. I only know 5-10 people I would call design engineers, drawerers are a dime a dozen. Don't be a drawerer

$40-50 per hour is reasonable for an individual with a degree. If its cash money and no 1099 then you can go a bit less.

There are quite a few of those here at my main gig...

I can't believe nobody questions anything on the prints or designs hardly ever

I do cad work on the side for $45 an hour for my previous employer. Mostly updating old assemblies, prints, and the like. Most of it is stuff that they have been doing different but have not updated since I left 3+ years ago. I imagine doing design work with your degree should be worth more than that.

He must not have wanted an engineer that badly.

He wanted to hire someone full time to do engineering and fabrication, then said the highest he ever paid anybody was $43k :Sonicjay:

Oh well, less crap that needs to get done after work makes for a happier lifestyle?
