Default why not supercharge my LS1?

I have a chance to pick up a roots style supercharger for my LS1 really cheap. The plan would be to keep it at a reasonable boost level, like 6 PSI and shoot for 500-ish HP. I was planning to do CNCíd heads + a cam, but thatís going to be more money to go that route. And because I canít fit long-tubes, the power increase wonít be as much as many people get with those mods.

I donít know of any cars on the Ultra 4 circuit that run supercharger and only one that has a turbo. Why donít more people run them?

What would be any reason why I would NOT want to run it?

PROS:
Relatively easy install, bolt-on power
Instant power at any RPM level
If my engine blows, I get another junkyard engine and bolt on the supercharger
Badass sound
Supercharger will sell for what I paid for it or more when Iím done with it

CONS:
Additional cooler required (I have room)
Additional coolant pump required (easy)
Additional fan required (I have room + easy)
More devices to fail (main downside)
Requires moving intake out of the cab and to the front, (I can make it work)

This is the exact model I would be getting:

If its a good deal, and most importantly, the thing is in good shape, then go for it. Make sure its not something thats missing parts that end up costing a lot of money to get it all going.

They take to the blowers really well, and give a lot of low end with them.

Its does add about 50 lbs or so, but shouldn't be too much of an affect...

800 miles on it and needs nothing. Good point about the weight.

Dont forget you'll have some expense with the tuner when its all done. not that its much but its another thing to think about. I am supercharging my 3 valve 4.6, thats going into my EB build. The only thing Im worried about is Intake air temps which should be no big deal to manage.

Im in the same mind set. It will be about 515-535 HP at the crank depending on the tune and boost set up, lots of mustang guys running this set up with no problems, and if it blows its a stock 4.6 drop another one in and away you go.

I don't see a downside if you can keep the IAT's down.

Call up Brenspeed if you haven't already purchased parts. They have used ones laying around intermittently when customers upgrade. I've personally driven several of their Mustangs with the Roush and Saleen packages on that motor. You'll love it.

Wait4meperformance just tuned both our buggies last week, would be $0 cost to retune.

I think he's holding off at this point. If I didn't have an expensive paperweight to buy this summer it would be going on my rig...

Methanol injection. I use it on my YJ and it works awesome. It also takes some wideband tuning.

Thanks, I already have all the parts, well except heat exchanger and pumps. I have a 2012 take of from the 5.4 shelby, and Im friends with the owner of department of boost, they make an aluminum intake to adapt the 5.4 shelby blowers to the 3 valve 4.6.

I cant wait!!!

That's a pretty slick budget boost kit. God those motors are massively wide compared to an LS though to put in a buggy...

yeah I was not planning on running this set up but you cant beat the power to dollar ratio

Yes the Mod motors are extremely wide (I think it is 5" wider than an LS motor) and it makes building the chassis a bit more complicated to say the least...lol I have to have it pretty wide in order to have enough room for pedals. but I am also building it with the motor sitting back pretty far compaired to what a stock EB would be, so the pedals are next to the motor like they would be in a van.

(Knaffie, sorry for the brief hijack,)

I'd go with a permanent IAT lowering device personally but to each their own.

I have been lurking for a good deal on a charger for my 5.3. I want to go FI someday.... If you do it, please share the info.. It is awesome learning about the ins and outs of it.
