Default Any service Department managers on here for Chevy dealers?

I have a certified used vehicle. With that I am supposed to get 2 years of free oil changes. How much is it to upgrade to synthetic for the oil change?

Yes, kickstand is interested in synthetic oil, in the past he didn't feel it was worth the extra money but every other car he has owned in the past year or two required it, so why not give it a shot in this one?

Anyway, my local dealer, where I bought the truck told me $7 a quart to upgrade. I thought since my oil change was supposed to be free that this pricing was a bit steep.

Of course they also told me my truck held 10 quarts of oil. So, I'm not so sure I trust them to change my oil anyway. Because I am almost 1,000% sure that the last time I changed my oil I only used 6 quarts for my 5.3 liter.

ENGINE OIL SPECIFICATIONS

SAE 5W-30

Use only engine oil licensed to the dexos1 specification, or equivalent, of the proper SAE viscosity grade. A/C Delco dexos1 Synthetic Blend is recommended.

Engine oils meeting the requirements for the vehicle should have the dexos1 approved certification mark. This certification mark indicates that the oil has been approved to the dexos1 specification.

NOTICE: Failure to use the recommended engine oil or equivalent can result in engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty. Check with your service provider on whether the oil is approved to the dexos1 specification.

That is copied directly from alldata. Your vehicle is supposed to have Dexos or equivalent in it which is a synthetic oil. If they sold you the truck telling you that you received 2 years of free oil changes they should be using a synthetic oil!!!

The dealer i work for is 7$ a quart for synthetic (mobil 1) also.....standard oil change for your truck is 30$, synthetic would be ~60$ so you would be responsible for ~30$.

Thats how it should work....you pay the difference in price.

So, here is the whole back story.

I didn't realize that the specified oil was a synthetic.

I bought the truck in January, I was told as long as the oil life monitor is under 20% we'll change the oil for free. Sales guy said lots of people do their own oil at 50%, then bring it in at 20%. I still trust the oil life monitor but had no idea when it was last changed, so at 50% I bought some mobil 1 synthetic and a filter, changed the oil. Now I am at change oil soon.

So I call up dealer guy and say "blah blah I have a certified used I want an oil change it's my first service, but I'd like to run mobil1 synthetic."

He says: "No problem $7 a quart upcharge. $70.00"

I say "even with my free oil change?"

He says "yup"

I say "hmmm I can get the oil cheaper than that myself, I guess I'll just change it out. Thanks"

5 minutes later.

He calls back. "Sorry I'm new at this, I forgot to credit you the $30 oil change, so it's $40 for Mobil 1"

I say "I can still get it cheaper myself"

He says "Well your truck does take 10 quarts of oil"

Me "no, it takes 6"

He says "I thought it was a diesel"

Me "a 1500 silverado diesel?"

He says "that's what my tech says"

Me "I don't trust your tech to change my oil thanks"

5 minutes later

"My tech was wrong, I didn't realize you had a 1500 5.3 liter, you're right its 6 quarts, and the charge to mobil 1 is only $12"

"Ok, I can't get it up there today (Friday), I'll bring it in Monday after I drop the kids off at school"

He says: "No problem, just bring it in and let them know *Name withheld to protect the poor sap* said it is $12 and you will be all set."

Fast forward to Monday 8:30 am.

"Hi, I am hear to get my oil changed, I have a certified used truck, I spoke to *name withheld to protect the poor sap* on Friday and he said it would be $12 to upgrade to mobil1 synthetic. I just wanted to know how long it would be (I planned on running home and picking it up when done) and confirm it was all set"

"I've never heard of that, it's $8 a quart to get mobil 1 synthetic."

"Where's "name protected"

He's not at his desk.

Oh for fucks sake.

2 minutes ago I got a voicemail from the Director of the service department, now my oill change is free, but I'm not so sure I trust my truck behind closed doors there anymore

Being an 09 your truck is not specified to take synthetic. The rest of it sounds like a cluster fukc .....just wait till they tell you they can't do it free because you have not reached the 7000 mile / 20% oil life threshold.....also don't forget your free oil change comes with a free tire rotation as well

In any 2011 or newer gm vehicle, if you don't use gm's Dexos synthetic blend or a Dexos approved oil it can void the engine warranty.

I am aware, i am below the 20% threshold.

I bought new tires since I got the truck and they came with a warranty, so they will get rotated where I bought the tires, not by these monkeys.

the unfortunate truth is that the guy your dealing with was probably flipping burgers a week ago and has no idea what he is doing. Alot of time your service depends on the person you are dealing with and from the other side of this situation gm is not making things any easier with all their oil change programs and paperwork debacles. I work at the Chevy dealer in highland ive been doing service for 13 years and I've helped several people on this forum. If you have any questions about oil changes or anything in general give me a call my direct line is 248-748-1133 id be more than happy to help.
sorry about your experience at the "fenton" dealership.
