Not particularly singling you out, but I don't understand why so many people use having kids as an excuse to stop doing the things they enjoy.

Lol, do you have kids?
At certain periods of your life your wants and needs are simply at the bottom of the list.
When kids are very young its all hands on deck.

2 of them.

My wants and needs do not take priority anymore, but it hasn't stopped me from doing the things in life that I enjoy doing.

I still went and did the things I enjoy doing. Not as often, but I didn't completely stop doing the things I enjoy. A lot of people flat out just quit doing anything.

Typical for us is 2-4 times a year, with those tending to be longer weekend trips that we drive a couple hundred miles to. I don't do much at the mounds for the last 8-10 years, which is the closest day-trip for us. I think I added it up and it was 2.7 trips a year over the last 15 years, plus 1-2 trips more a year to places like the mounds.

Kids do and don't stop you from doing things.

Taking the my boys 4 wheeling works fine, they enjoy it, and are big enough that its safe in my opinion for them. My 2yr daughter has not been to any trips with us. My CJ7 wouldn't easily work with her car seat, and I haven't wanted to take her to silver lake, which is our typical family wheeling trip.

It depends on a lot of specifics. If you are a single individual, and go wheeling when you feel like it, then you are more flexible. If your trips are planning/scehduled events, then having kids increases the chance that you've got something going on that day, and can't make it, or maybe someone is sick.

It also might be that instead of spending time wrenching on a broken vehicle in the garage to get ready for a trip, you decide you'd rather go to the playground or movies or fishing with your kid.

I have never looked at it as kids prevent you from doing what you want. I've seen a lot of people who think that way, the ones I know like that tend to be people who don't have kids, or don't have a lot of commitments or something. For me, its that having kids means there are new things in your life that *gasp* you might like to do even more than 4 wheeling. There's only so much time. Myself, I'm interested in 4 wheeling, but also hot rods, bowling, golf, gardening, metal detecting, rocketry & fireworks, woodworking, etc. And those are just my interests, I need to consider that my wife/kids might have additional interests, and those need to be given just as much weight as well.

3-4 trips a year is actually just about right for us. 1 snow trip, 1 sand dunes, 1 trip to canada, tennessee, attica, etc, maybe another trip somewhere to a local park.

Not nearly as much as I'd like...

3-5 times a year that I actually load the jeep on a trailer and go somplace.

I have three kids. 16, 14 and 12. They have wheeled with me since they were little. It's harder now to get them all together at the asme time, but I've also enjoyed having the oldest drive when we wheel.

was about 10 times a yr. 1-2 trips to the dunes. couple to r@v,mounds other parks.

this year so far its only been to snofari.

this trend is why I sold my buggy and built my new land cruiser. I felt bad having a buggy sit 355 days a year. so now I can drive my cruiser on the road. take it to a buddies house. drive it to work once in a while. and still hit the hardest trails when I get a chance to.

Your kids are the same age as mine! I have a VERY active family in athletics and I feel bad not going to support them. My oldest is asking to go the next trip with me It should be fun!

Yeah, I traded in my bigger vehicles, now have a CJ7 on 33s. I set it up so that if I could drive it on the street evry day if I wanted, and be happy with it, then its easier to justify the time and money. Something that gets used 4 weekends a year is tough to justify.

Please define, "Wheel"
Do you simply mean drive with a vehical locked in four wheel drive in a location not designated as a public road way.

Three years ago I looked at it and put a new caliper on the right rear. Two years ago I wheeled it onto a trailer and zipped around the yard a few times to diagnose a bad throttle position sensor. I started it twice last year. I put a solar charger on the battery this year.

I dont have any kids. My best freind has two daughters one is 27 the other just turned 21.
The kids were both wheeling in a car seat and camping since they were born. They went boating, snowmobiling, pretty much didnt change anything except the language around the camp fire.
It may slow most couples down, but it doesnt have too.

If this is the metric, I have never wheeled.
