Default Crate Motor vs Rebuild

I am as confused as ever with what to do with the 360 out of my jeep. I got a quote from the local machine shop to include all possible labor for just the bottom end and a master rebuild kit. I know I'm going to need to do some head work as well due to some slight pitting in the valves (some had almost an 1/8th inch of carbon build up) and I have not even priced that yet. At a possibility of $2200 and I do all of the assembly, which requires a few tool purchases, it got me thinking about going another route.

After looking around last night I found:
http://www.precisionengine.com/rebui...nes/index.html
300hp and 360ft/lbs at $2200 is going to be hard to beat. Shipping is $175 and a $350 core charge and wouldn't be too much more than just the tools i need to buy for the bottom end and rebuild the valvetrain.

I will not swap in a chebby 350.

Sounds like the crate might be the way to go. Then you have a nice clean engine, less work, and good power. Also, good call sticking with what belongs in the engine bay. Im more of a chevy guy, but I have always seen sbc swaps into fords and dodges as insulting to the original brand and just wrong.

crate or a ls motor for 600 out of a junkyard...i would never spend that kind of money on a rebuild or crate when there are so many turnkey ls options out there for half the price.

It's a jeep with a 360. It's going to stay a jeep with a 360. I also don't see how at the end of the swap an ls would be any cheaper.

Build it. That way you know what's inside. And it's built how you want it, not how some boob on the assembly line screwed it together.

Whatever boob did it before made it to 157k before it was burning and leaking as much oil as gas it was burning.

First, find another machine shop. Then start your own build on it.

IF you want a 0-mile motor, in this case, I would build it.

If you can find a used motor in good condition, I would go that route first.

Depends a lot on the situation and motor you are talking about. Since you are going AMC360, I would want to build that, with the typical upgrades to the oiling system, and a few fixes particular to the AMC V8s.

If it was something like a Chevy 350, I'd maybe think about one of the cheap crate motors out there that are a good value.

The LS engines, I love them, but they aren't plug and play by any means. I am building up a 500+ HP LS2 for one of my CJ's right now.

So what are you getting for $2200? If I remember right, there was a guy on this side of the state that put together a stroked 304 for less than that including the machine work, and had plans to work and do the same to a 360 if I remember right.

The guy is amundaza and I know he has been active here as well as on IFSJA.org

The link in the first post is the longblock I have my eye on. I read a couple of online reviews on random forums and people seemed to be happy with them. I sent them an email and am waiting to hear back.

Holland machine is the only place I have gotten a quote from so far.

The $2200 included all possible machine work including decking the block and heads as well as a master rebuild kit.

If that is a assembled long block for that price it seems fair as hell considering it is a 360.

Nice to go with a local company. If you have a issue they are right down the road. You never really know what your getting with an engine exchange.

Give Varneys a call in Muskegon. Best prices I've found and they do great work for a lot of bad-ass rides in WM.
