Default Yj 2.5l idle problems

Long story short....I ran out of gas a couple weeks ago. Since then my jeep has not ran right. Wouldn't idle...it would start right up but would only run of I kept it going by pumping the gas peddle. I could drive it but had to constantly keep it going at stop signs by pumping the peddle...but I couldn't get it past 45 or it would sputter and loose significant power.

I thought I had it narrowed down to the fuel pump. Changed that last night. Now it still seems to loose a little power at higher speed. However, I won't idle consistant.

It will idle when I first start it. Around 1100 rpm but drop to around 500 then jump back up to around 1100. It stays running but keeps jumping up in rpms.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a similar problem in my 95, changed fuel pump, no help, changed O2 sensor, no nelp. Ended up changing the PCM, problem solved. Hopefully you wont have to change the PCM, it is the most expensive of the three. good luck

Got to thinking today, another problem I had that I thought was the fuel pump, ended up being corroded contacts in the pig tail that goes to the fuel pump, which is located over the rear driverside tire tucked between the frame and tub. I went to the junk yard and found an XJ and took both ends because they are not the same 3 or 4 wire, but it worked.
