Default 87' renix XJ' wont start-just pops. CPS?

I have and 89'xj i got for 200$, the one in my pics. Its solid, no rust, new 242t-case. The guy said it needed a fuel pump.
So i get it home, throw a battery in it, check all the fuses and relays, and got the fuel pump humming and building psi. So it fired over, and i drove it a couple times.
Recently i went ot start it, it cranks, has fuel psi, and pop's over just for a sec and shuts offf. It keeps doing this, and sometimes wont even pop.
I checked all the terminal conections for corrosion. checked fuel, checked spark.
The only thing i can seem to find it would be is the Crank sensor, which is known to go bad, they had a service bulletin recal, or the ceramic fuel resistor which i bypassed. Or it could be the ecu.
The reason i think its the CPS is because the tach dosent move when cranking. and ive heard and seen its suppose to.

Any ideas?
If anyone has and extra CPS, ill throw some cash for it, and pay for shipping all thru paypal.

BUMP FOR HELP!

update.
I put a gauge on the fuel rail port, jumper'd the fuel pump with the diagnostic terminals,5&6. It showed almost 40 psi, a lil hi because I jumper passed the resistor, and thre was no vaccum to the regulator since it wasnt running.

Im gettin Ohms on the CPS, and im pretty sure if it was bad it would run at all.
Like I said, It fires over and within 1-2 seconds stalls, and repaeats. Till ventually it wont fire at all.. Then I have to disconect the batter terminals and conect them to clear the pcm.
I mssed around with the IAC idle steppr, and tps, and didnt seem to make a diff.
I heard that the there could be a problem with my egr, but would that keep it from running?,
I also heard that thre could be a problem wit the ignition swith itself or the linkag in the column.
OhhYEA, I noticed it will crank over in any gear, its and auto, but inkw it should have a N-saftey switch, could this be something else to consider?

Its getting spark, change cap and rotor.
How can I test the TPS, And IAC Stepper motor?
Someone said something about the latch relay also, any input on what or why that would casue the problem. I hear the relays clicking for the latch.
You think It could be the cam sensor in the distributor?

I also found a box relay, that is fed from the battery about 6" away, has a post with fuseable links, they all checked out good. How about the relay box itself would that cause this run then stall issue?

Its driving me nuts!, I just had it running, a day befor this happened.
Please, any input would help guys, I gotta start driving to work, Im tired of riding with this dirty old hippy.

Any suggestions would be great,
if i cant figure it out soon, its gonna get a 30-06 M1 garand paint job.

well thanks but no thanks, after listning to everyone but myself, and spending 2 years of time on-off and money, all along it was the ecu. Sure a lot of diagnostics on my part with the volt meter, checking sensors, reading the FSM, I finally narrowed it down to the ignition switch on top of the column, after checking that, all that was left was the ECU. BTW, THE ECU SUPPOSIVLEY ONLY HAS A 15 year lifespan, and some last longer then others I guess depending on conditions.
So I found and ecu with all the same numbers on ebay, just make sure all the numbers at bottom of ecu match if you buy a used.. And for $60.00 SHIPED, I pluged it in and ran like a champ!!!
I got prices of 100$-180 for a new one from autozone-advance-online stores, just make sure whatever way you go you get the numbers correct.

I figured out it was the ECU, because it was the onlything that would causethe spark and injectors to stop firing after about 5 seconds of key on time of each key cycle.
So if you just have no spark, or no fuel, do your research and youll prob get lucky and it mite just be a fuel pump or CPS. Sites like LUNGHD.COM, and thus forum as well as others have great info.. Just google 87-88-89 jeep 4.0 wont start, start stall, etc.
so hopefully this helps anyone that may come to this in future..
