Default 1997+ F150 unit bearings

can I drive on 1997+ unit bearings WITHOUT the halfshafts installed, or does that style unit bearing require the preload of the halfshaft?

I looked at them when I got home. Fairly certain they need the preload. I like your idea though. I might head a junkyard and buy a second set and "modify" them for this.
