Default lawn fertilizers, anyone use trugreen?

Im looking for some fertilizer advice for my yard. I have about 1.5 acres that need done. I priced it out at HD and scotts would cost me $150 to do myself. I called Trugreen and they said they will do it for $98!? Is the HD stuff that much better?

I don't know, but that new snap in/ lock in fertilizer bag system with the spreader looks cool as hell, no more accidentally tipping the spreader over while filling it causing a large burn patch in the lawn, accidentally spilling half emptied bags etc.

I worked for several different branches of trugreen... that could be a thread in itself, but as far as the product is concerned, i would say they are relatively equal. Trugreen buys in HUGE quantities and many of the applications are liquid, which is cheaper. Box stores charge a premium on the stuff because...well, people pay it. Check out a local mill, or find a Lesco dealer (sometimes places that sell mowers or landscape stuff, etc) nearby and you'll save quite a bit per bag...even on pre emmergent. Trugreen is going to sign you up on a monthly plan, so you're looking at $98 per month, and it will be a constant battle if you only want that one application. If you really want a nice lawn it will take multiple applications though, usually 2 herbicide apps for weed/crabgrass control, etc.
This is what I will say about Trugreen, be mindful of the applications. The product is good, and it can work if you get a good tech... but if you get the wrong one you're wasting your money. I would schedule the application on a saturday or sometime when you are home so you can watch them do it (a hand granular application on 1.5 acres he should be refilling that spreader AT LEAST once). I might even request a "buggy" application (motorized spreader) on a larger lawn like yours because they tend to do better job. It's been a few years but when I worked there it was all commision work, so the more lawns you do in a day, the more you get paid... so you can imagine the corners that got cut. But I believe the business model has changed to straight pay now so hopefully it's better. Also, check out some "mom and pop" local lawncare guys...might be similar price and more personal service.

When I worked for a golf course I asked the head grounds manager what the best fertilizer for a home owner was and he said to buy Scotts. I have used it ever since with good results. Get the weed and feed one to kill the weeds.

My lawn has the best dandelions in the neighborhood. I've been using Scott's for 3 years.

I have an acre. I have a very nice lawn, and spend tons of time keeping it looking that way.

four years ago I happened to keep the receipts for my yard chemicals from home depot and it was over $1500. This is including grub stuff, pre-emergence all the way to the fall fertilizer and hundreds of dollars in seed (for over seeding)

Switched to a company out of flint that my dad has used for years and I pre-pay $610 and they do all 6 feedings including aeration and over seeding with kentucky bluegrass.

My yard looks exactly the same color wise, and the over seeding has made it extremely thick. if I notice weeds, I call them and they show up the next day to spot treat. I honestly don't know how they can make money doing this, as it is almost a third of the cost that I paid for the material by itself.

Trugreen was the 2nd worst company I have ever hired, Charter was the 1st. If I had 6 hours I would give you the details.

If I had to rely on Trugreen for keeping my only food source green and weed free I would just as soon starve to death. It's a marketing machine not a lawn care service!

Sorry. OP was asking a two part question. One was about trugreen (which I have no experience with) and the second part was the cost savings from switching to a yard company I use Custom Lawn Care. http://www.spraymylawn.com/

If anybody ends up calling to go with their service, send me a pm. I get to use 4 referrals a year. Referrals = $25 for me and $25 for you off your bill.

we live on 1 acre. my wife was nice enough to agree to NO lawn. it's all trees, ground covers and nature. even along the curb she planted annuals and put down lots of mulch.

our next door neighbor followed suit. he used to cut his lawn then seveal years ago decided to let it go natural. he only worries about the first 15 feet from the edge of the road (no sidewalks).

no complaints from the neighbors and no herbicides nor lawnmowers

WOOT! Custom Care wants $69 per app, Tru Green wanted $100

I never was happy With TruGreen any way

I switched, Kelly, you will be getting 1 referral from this.

Either that or someone else on your street with the same last name since they didn't have a first name on the account LOL

I used TruGreen for a few years and had pretty good results. I began using them when we had a severe dry, hot spell and suddenly my lawn seemed to be getting overrun with crabgrass. They really helped to eradicate it. Since then I've been on annual plans with aeration, overseeding, and fertilizer.

However, last year I started looking at prices of a few other places and realized that TruGreen was really expensive. I ended up switching to using my lawn cutting crew for all of those things as well for about half the cost and so far the same results. I am thinking about using the savings to put in a sprinkler system this year.

It's cheaper to have a company to do it. I worked for a lawn care company last year and we got our granular by the pallets so of course it was cheaper for us because it was purchased in bulk. Put down a slow release with a high nitrogen to get that better color.

Don't go with TruGreen. We took over many of their customers. We had a new customer that I started doing his lawn about mid summer last year. He switched from Tru Green. It looked like crap. Weeds everywhere, bad color, and the grass was pretty thin. After just three applications, I had that lawn looking beautiful.

DON'T FORGET TO WATER!

I fired Trugreen last year. I used them for 2 years and always prepaid for the full year. I always had to call them 3-4 times per year and say "I have this and this types of weeds growing" and they would send someone else out and 1/2 the time it wouldn't kill it. So I went and bought my own products and took care of it. They're worthless. They don't pay any attention to what you specific lawn needs, they simply spray on whatever everyone else is getting and go on to the next house...
