I looked in to this about 25 years ago. You first need to be able to prove you could keep up on proper procedures for the kind of search you'd do. Then you choose a dog. Then both you and the dog do training to prove both could work together.
Back in 93-94 it would have been about 10,000 dollars and I was told criminal justice course were recommended. This was for missing people, where a crime might have happened. Not for a lost hiker.
They use to use the parks on Hines Drive to test, teach, try out, train. I'd drive by and think, that looks like fun.
I was seriously thinking about doing this or a drug/bomb sniffing dog. A co-worker had donated a puppy to leader blind it failed testing but they took it for drug sniffing. They got to go to the dogs graduation.Seemed fun to.
I gave up on the idea when I was injured in summer of 94. I can not run, so I can't chase a dog around loose.
Still would love doing something useful with a dog as a co-worker, I get along with most dogs - people not so much.
Please share if you do this,
