Default First time going to the dunes...

So memorial day weekend will be my first time going to Silver Lake. Was wondering what camp sites anybody would reccomend? Not bringing a camper or anything just looking to set up a tent. Also looking for any other tips I should know about before I go. Any info would be appriciated!

Thanks - Alex

Also if anyone else from here is going we should all meet up. Trying to get a big group together from Howell to go.

Interested in the same info.

Once I get my Jeep up onto 33s I'll be wandering all over the state this summer. Silver Lake is gonna be near the top of the list.

The camp behind the grocery store is much nicer than the state park. And closer to hotdogs and beer. I will get you a name.

We stay at yogi, all you need is a dune flag/mount, your ORV sticker and air down. There is a place that has a way to pump them back up outside SL.

Planning your first trip on a holiday weekend may not be the best idea...the park is packed, the voucher line is insane, and all of the campgrounds will be sold out, if they aren't already.

Don't get me wrong, I rarely miss memorial weekend...but that's because the idiot watching is at it's best, but I would hate to make my first trip during that madness.

Snail/turbo guy has a point. holiday weekends can be kinda crazy. If you go, don't plan on getting much run time. Just find a good spot to watch the fools.

Weekdays are the best to play, but there is plenty of fun things to see on non holiday weekends. Fuck going on holiday weekends.

Make calls for motel/campgrounds asap.(chances are everything is booked, but...) Dont, just show up and hope for a campsite/wont happen. Good luck though. Its worth the trip, imo.

Plan on being in the voucher line at 6am on fri morning if you expect to get in before 5pm the rest of the weekend.

The people watching is great on the holiday weekends but some of the crap you have to deal with to get on the dunes isn't much fun, I doupt I will ever go on a holiday weekend again, not worth the hassle.

And don't go to hideaway if you want to stay up past midnight. They will come around and put out your campfire for you while you watch.

The days of the 'sit up all night and party with the gang' campgrounds are gone. The best bet is a cabin or the east side of the state park if you don't want to have to contend with 'fires out, lights out, go to bed time.' But they'll even toss ya out of the state park if your group pushes it beyond a very dull roar.

If you don't have your reservations by now, you aren't getting in anywhere near the dunes on a holiday. Right about now Big Rapids is as close as you'll probably get

After 27+ years of going we no longer even go on a summer weekend, let alone a holiday. Between the F'd up voucher BS and it just being a bunch of total jackass weekend Einsteins itching for a helicopter trip to the hospital, it takes the fun out of it.

Enjoy your trip!

Don't even bother going unless you have 40" tires 1 ton axles and a big block with nitrous, and 2 dune flags.

Hahahahahahaha!

I remember back in the day when it use to rain and make the sand hard, one of the locals always use to take a white Chrysler Cordoba out there. Just lots of Subaru's, AWD mini vans and Elements now a day.

You still see stock front wheel drive cars out on the dunes.
