Default Cheap car with awesome mpg

Was looking for a crx, but they are kind of hard to find not beat up, so trying to expand my search.

I don't want to spend more than two grand with buying, any repair, and titling/license plate.

I would like to get a two door manual, either hatchback or coupe. I don't see the point in buying one unless I get at a minimum about 35 mpg highway.

So my question to you guys is what else is really out there. It gets hard researching from a phone in my spare time. And please don't tell me to go to the library... or lug my desktop to Starbucks.

I'd like something that looks decent, and I like the look of the crx/golf etc.

I had seveval CRXs and older Honda hatches. I really liked the 2 door hatches, they were a lot of fun to drive, and usually got me 36-38mpg, and 40-45 on slow highways.

SUCKED in rain, though, lightweight and hydroplaned bad.

There's the 88-91s, and 92-95s. Hard thing is they are old enough that rust is a concern.

As kicking as those plaid seats are, I don't think it qualifies the 120 miles a day that I'll be driving for a couple months.

If the year didn't at least start with a "2" I wouldn't feel comfortable relying on it for 120 miles per day.

Mid 90's escort 5 speed. I had a 96 hatchback that usually got 35+, and 40 on slow hi-ways. It was a good car.

Or a 90's single cam saturn 5 speed. I had an auto that got 30+....

I have the dually as backup. I just don't want to drive the truck that many miles every day all week. This should only last a few months...

I'd probably have to drive 20 miles to the bus, then all that other crap to get there.

True that. My buddy had one that burned a quart every 50-100 miles depending on how high he revved it... until they rebuilt it in a weekend while it was in the car.
