I've been to a few types of auctions like this. Some were no reserve and were alot of fun, people left with some smokin deals, myself included, picked up a 1960 Plymouth wagon for $50 and a 1957 Hemi Chrysler for $700.

However more often than not collections like this are reserve, or worse yet "Owner's discression" which basically means when all the bidding is done, the owner (or trustee) decides whether the bidding went high enough for the item to sell. I've been to those auctions and they totally suck. At one I watched the bidding war go on for a half an hour for a house and barn. When the highest bid was in, the trustee said "nah, not enough" and the bidder didn't get the place.

You will run into that situation with real estate where the seller has the right to accept or deny the final bid. I have never seen that with any other stuff at auction and I have been to, worked, or conducted literally thousands of auctions. If an item has a reserve, the auctioneer knows what that number is. It won't be up to the seller to decide after the bidding is done. This auction is to settle the estate, the stuff needs to be sold and gone. When I hold an auction for a seller, at most there will be 2-3 items with reserves. If they try to put reserves on more items, we have a little come to Jesus talk about whether they want to have an auction or a garage sale. It will be worth the trip for this auction. I can't wait...

Yes, of the couple dozen I've been to, only one was an issue with the cars. Mid auction the owner informed the auctioneer they would have final say on the cars. The head of the auctioneer service got into a heated discussion with the owner of the stuff, but caved to the owner's wishes and made the announcement that the owner had final say. After the owner denied a couple high bids the crowd started to leave, so she quickly changed her tune and everything was sold no reserve.

Sounds like the auctioneer was an idiot without a good contract in place detailing little things like that. My contract is VERY specific on issues like that. It itemizes the 2-3 items that will be subject to reserve and what that reserve price is. No grey area. If a seller were to pull that at my auction, I would take them aside and explain that if they decide to try that crap, my contract specifically states that they are cannot do it legally and if they interfere for the sale, I am still to be paid my commission based on an appraisal. Of course, the contract also states that THEY pay for the appraisal, but I get to pick the appraiser. It has never been an issue for me and I doubt it ever will be.

Very well could have been. It was the worse auction I've ever been to. They had two seperate auctioneers at two ends of the property going at the same time. I missed out on a K30 4x4 that sold for $200 because I was bidding on another truck on the other side. And you had to immediately pay at the end of each auction, instead of at the end of it all, which meant you missed out on 2-3 items while you were paying for the last thing you won. The owner was furious at the auction service, understandably so.

Yes, I do. It was 10-12 years ago. I knew who the auctioneer/company was. He died a couple of years ago. They used to run the MC antique warehouse.

If you are involved in the auction, have them do some double checking on the two 41 Willys MBs. The one with the red wheels has the wrong grille and I can't make out a willys script. With the low serial number it should be a slat grille and have a script. The other 41 MB they show with a slat grille however has a high serial number so it should not have a slat grille. I'm thinking they may have switched the titles around on the two.
