Interesting article, lots of pretty graphs and stuff to make it look well thought out. I especially like how he arbitrarily assigns various politicians a an arbitrary graph and presents as if it were fact.

I think that what he's talking about is the same progression that nearly every society sees.

Initial success leads to prosperity. (initial failure leads to quick collapse, so it doesn't progress)
Two things are true about prosperity;
1) it allows people to be able to have leisure time where they can allow themselves to be distracted from what made them prosperous in the first place.
and,
2) it is never evenly distributed, so there will always be people without, who want what the others have.

Eventually, many of the people who have posterity get upset when the conditions that they were prosperous under change, and demand that somebody do something about it.

Those that have not prospered demand that somebody do something to help them prosper.

Along comes the politician. And not some evil corrupt politician, but one that truly wants to help. He hears the stories, and promises to help. (to be continued)

....and we get to the current situation......where those who work for a living are outvoted by those who vote for their living.

Right. we start to demonize the "others" and speak in slogans just like that. We elect politicians that seize on that and it perpetuates the cycle. Those at the bottom forget that without ambitious people innovating and taking risks that things don't move forward. Those at the top forget that the divide between "haves" and "havenots" is a chasm that will swallow the entire society if it gets to wide. They forget that without workers willing to do the work, and consumers able to consume, they will not continue to prosper.

So we demonize the "others", speak in slogans, elect politicians that say they will do the things we say we want done. The sides move further apart, the actions of government become more extreme, the "political theater" replaces actual governance.

Eventually one side or the other prevails, at least for a while. But history shows that neither oligarchies nor socialism can last without resorting to totalitarianism. Increasingly draconian measures are required to maintain the status quo and we end up in the Orwellian world.
