Default Looking to buy a used 4dr JK, issues??

My wife has been all about the four door JKs ever since she first saw a concept vehicle. looking at used so far, dont know much about them, any JK owners wanna chime in with their concerns or issues or techs who would like to tell me what to look for when looking. I would really appreciate it

We have one and compared to a tJ it's a luxury vehicle. The older jks with the minivan motors can't get out of their own way. Mike has beat the crap out of his and it is still going strong.
The older models the middle of the hard top is noisy at times.

The good thing about the mini van motor, while yes, not a burn out machine, if it ever lets loose, they're cheap and pleantyful

When was the last time it had an alignment? They're known for shitty ball joints and weak inner C's. If it can't track right, walk away.

I've had mine since July 2007 and have no complaints other than poor gas mileage (which wasn't an issue until we moved 35 miles from my office).

I've had a 2010 and a 2012. The shifter broke on the 10 but I think that was just a fluke. The pentastar on the 12 is waaayyyyy more powerful than the old minivan motor.

They don't beat you up on long trips either.

agreed. Between myself and my Brothers we have had an 07, 08, 09, 10 and 12 JK and I wouldnt buy an older one with the 3.8L unless I could steal it and drop a hemi in it. Also the 11+ interior is much nicer.

I was told this, not only is teh new motor way more power, but actually gets better fuel economy over the old mini van motor

win win

I'm thinking the same way, this summer I'll start looking for used 2012, which is the first year for the new motor.

I love my 4 door. From a daily driver stand point there is no comparison between it and its predecessors. It rides and handles like a real vehicle...and you can still take the top and doors off of it.

Everyone dogs on the 3.8. Yes it is way under powered in this current, "Every vehicle has to make 300+HP", car market its not horrible. I guess maybe the thing is I bought a Jeep because I wanted a Jeep. If I wanted something where the 0-60 times mattered to me I wouldn't have bought a JK. That being said, until I started putting bigger tires on it I never really had an issue with its power. The only times I've ever had an issue with the power was when I was running 35's on the stock 4.10 gearing. Out on the interstate it just didn't want to hold over drive. After a regear to the 5.38's I can't say I have any complaints on the 37's.

Fuel mileage started out pretty damn good for having the aerodynamics of a brick. The first week or so we had it we took a 10 hour road trip and I was averaging around 20-21mpg bone stock. However now after another 50k miles, beating on it, 5.38's, beating on it, putting 37's on, adding a bunch more weight I'm hovering around the 14-16mpg range. But to me this all goes in the same category as the power...if I wanted fuel economy I wouldn't have bought a Jeep.

The ride quality is what I have liked the most, before I started beating it. While I've never really been much into nice riding vehicles I have to say when it was stock and until recently it rode like a dream. By far the best vehicle I've ever owned...which may not be saying a lot. The seats are VERY comfortable. I had no problem getting in and driving it 10 hours non stop, I say that after a couple back surgeries too. The handling has always been great, specially for what it is. I've made a few high speed maneuvers and never really been worried about putting it rubber side up. Now that it has 125k on it it needs new shocks, new control arms, etc... I'm hoping the new lift will bring back a lot of what it used to have. My only complaint is that the hard top is noisy as hell. The 07-10(?) hard tops were poorly designed and where the two freedom panels meet in the front lift up just enough so you get wind noise in the center. They have fixed this on the newer models though.

Some things to look out for would be the gas tank over flow issue. It was a recall on some years. Mine was not included...tweak says to call and bitch. I just pay attention as I fill up though. Of course bent tubes and C's. I've saw a lot of these JK's get fully de-moded and sold on boards or traded in so bone stock might not always mean it wasn't beat Exhaust manifolds also like to crack.

Long post, but I think if you, or anyone else, buys a 4 door JK with reasonable expectations, IE not expecting Cadillac ride, Porsche handling, Lambo acceleration, and Civic fuel economy, you will not be dissapointed.

Hope that helps.

My good freind has a 09 rubi unlilited. It has had a few minor problems.
The t-case shifter linkage is a joke. It will fail when you need it. Aftermarket lits are available to fix it, or you can make your own lile I did on his.
Balljoints are junk and so are the front axle shafts. The 12 got a new front axle shaft and you have to buy the complete shaft for a 12 to repair your 07-11. Of course the aftermarket has the fix for this also.
The mini van motor is a oil burning turd. He uses a qt every 1000 miles. His feels much better after he did a superchip ,kn, and the drive by wire gas pedal mod.
The jk is known to come from the factory with suspension bolts that were not properly torqued at the factory. This can result in premature wear on bushings and front end parts. The front trac bar bolt is too small for the holes it goes through and has threads down the whole length, it should be shouldered.

The door hinges still lose paint and look like shit after a few years so everyone will know its a jeep. The running boards make a great shelf for ice and snow to freeze on making your back doors useless on a long winter trip.

That is probably not a bad plan. However when you start looking at the prices of these things a year old you are just better off spending a couple grand more and getting a brand new one.

From what I've read here and there the 12's have not been without motor issues. I'd look into that a little more before I bought one for sure.

The one thing I would do for sure is avoid the 11's. I don't know if it has gotten any better lately, but for awhile that was just a bastard year that no one built stuff for. If you notice a lot of stuff is for 07-10 and then 12-current.

While not a four door... I miss the hell out of my 2010 Islander. I bought it brand new. The suspension was leaps and bounds better than all of my other TJs and YJ. Very comfortable and capable ride while exploring rock country in central Texas while I was stationed at Fort Hood.

The only complaint I had was with the engine. That mini-van motor had zero balls. If there was any sort of cross or head wind while driving on the freeway sixth gear was completely useless. That problem was even worse in my buddy's 2009 four door Sahara.

As to why I sold it:

I took it in for its first oil change (since the first three were free). The dealership I bought it from was a 25 minute run down the freeway. Well... driving back home the oil light came on. It has no gauges for actual pressure. I was three miles down the road from my apartment. Once I got off the freeway and into my apartment complex the motor sounded like a diesel. I killed it immediately and called the dealership. They sent a flat bed out and took it back to the dealership where they discovered that the tech who installed the oil filter somehow managed to fukc it up and in the course of driving home it blew all the oil out onto the freeway. They redid the oil change and said it was fine. When I showed up the top end was making a hell of a lot more noise than before and after some heated arguing the dealership powers that be of course said they didn't hear anything different and refused to fix it.

I sold it to an Air Force weather man two months later.

I still think the jk is ugly as sin. I thought it would grow on me, but here we are 5 + years after they were introduced and it still hasn't happened.

I have a 2010 Jk.. like everything about it as far as ride and doesn't seem to lack to much power.. I average about 17-19 mpg. The only issue I have had is the windshield had a very small leak but that was caused from the PO replacing the windshield and it was not properly sealed.. Had that taken care of and have no issues.. If you look around and find the right dealer you can work some upgrades into your price.. The one I found put a 2 inch lift and remote start on mine and it was included in the price..

That's where the snorkel and Hellas came from on my old JK.
