Default First DH MTB Race of the year is in the books, pics and a poorly written story inside

Well, the first race of the year is in the books. It was just my fiance and I. One year ago this weekend I took her on a hike deep into the inbred infested wilderness of WV and asked her to marry me, and then we stayed with friends for the rest of the weekend and rode bikes and race. So in celebration of her tolerating me and still wanting to marry me a year later we decided just the two of us would head down and attend the race.

With that in mind we took the focus to save money on fuel compared to the truck. Terrible idea, the $150 in fuel savings was nice, but things were a bit tight in the packing department. . Unfortunately that means I also forgot some pretty important things, like our mud fenders for our bikes. Go Pro brackets/mounts/etc. Maybe that's why I raced better?

Hiding in the car is two full DH bikes under the comfortor, a cooler, food, clothes, helmets, body armour, etc.

Snowshoe is known for rain, slimy ass red clay, big rocks, and wet roots. It didn't disappoint. Here is our view from our condo. This was friday morning.

Friday was supposed to be a good day for my fiance to practice on the race course with out all the big crowds, give her a chance to find her lines, not get nervous as the fast guys rolled up on her, etc. Well with the rain, that didn't work out so well, her first run down the race course (after a few morning warm up runs) resulted in her doing a slip in slide on her face down a section of trail that looked like peanut butter. Friday ended up being a waste as far as riding goes.

Saturday we woke up to blue skies, We decided to do a course walk and check things out before the lifts started running. Unfortunately there is no cell service in the area and I forgot to tell my phone to stop searching for service, and I forgot the gopro in the condo, so I only got a few pics.

The lodge and village are on the top of the mountain, so here we are walking over to the race course.

Brad starting down the first corner, starting to dry up.

Road gap at the top of the course, you can definitely see how wet the clay was.

Looking down the first technical section.

Looking up the same section, My fiance on the left, our friend christina on the right.

Slimy corner after a jump heading back over to the woods.

Back in the woods, the line here is to hug the tree above Jessica, and come straight through and hug the tree below her, both rooty sections are about 3 foot drops. Steep.

Top rock garden, You can either take the line to the right through all the "little rocks" or you can go up on the big flat rock to the left and drop off the back over that little rock and chunk of grass. You have to clear about 2 ft to clear that small rock, and its about a 3-4 ft drop. Pretty fun, and a lot smoother than bouncing through all the small rocks. Easier on the arm pump.

Unfortunately my phone died and we didn't get any pictures of the next two rock gardens, this was probably only the top 1/3rd of the trail. Total trail length was just about 1.5 miles.

Bikes at the condo after a bath.

I finished 2nd in my division 2 seconds behind another Michigan rider from Traverse City. I got down the course in 5:50.

Jessica Finished first in beginner women. She was able to get down the course in 9:42.

Overall it was a great weekend. I haven't found any pictures of us yet from any of the photographers that were there, but if I do I'll be sure to share them as I am sure you all are on the edge of your chairs waiting for them.

That's especially cool that your girl rides. My wife has a very nicely setup mtb but won't entertain trail riding after experiencing it a couple of times.

Yeah, it makes it a lot easier for me to justify spending money on bikes when she wants one too

She rides a lot of cross country around here, but she also does a few women's weekends throughout the year as well. That has REALLY helped her confidence and made her a lot better rider.

A year ago she would have looked at this race course and laughed if I suggested she race, this year she took first place in her class and was actually looking forward to racing.

Another shot from practice.

This is right on the rocks in the photo where the girls are standing in the trail on the roots and rocks.

Neither do people who ride 69'ers

That fad never really stuck with anyone, but 29" wheels haven't proven to hold up to DH abuse yet. There are a fair amount of people experimenting with 650b (27.5") wheels now though.

Haha! That's what's in my garage right now. What's worse, it's a SS rigid.

Perhaps you would be interested in offloading it at bargain basement prices.

It feels a lot like the stockade jump at Copper Ridge. You just travel a lot farther in the air and come off the jump with a lot more speed.

My Epic Plank Stickers arrived yesterday
