not 4x4 related but need some help

My wife has a 1997 Grand Marquis, it has the dimming interior lights in it. She got home from work tonight locked the doors and the lights dimmed and went off like normal.. then almost right away they turned back on, then dimmed and went out again, this continued a couple times. She opened the door hit the lock button a bunch of times, and closed the door. so far it has been staying off (she has been home now for about 20 mins) Any ideas on what to look at, or where to start?

Check for water in the number lock pad on the outside of the door.
