Default Temporary Transmission Fixes

A buddy just picked up a beater truck(91 F-150 to be specific, 302 V8, automatic) and wants to get a little more life out of it. It runs well but the trans is tired. It still drives and shifts, but basically feels like it has a high stall converter. I imagine the torque converter is on its way out.

Does anybody know some quick/cheap/free tricks to help it grab better and get a little more life out of it? Does the old sawdust in the trans fluid myth really work? Any other ideas or additives? Previous owner said there's already some Lucas additive in there.

Would a trans flush help or is it likely to never work again after? I'm hesitant to do anything major and have it not work at all. I do NOT want to throw a bunch of time and money into this, we just wanna prolong its life a bit.

We did the saw dust in the trans trick in our Automotive Technology class at OTech back in high school on a Ford Excursion 4x4 Limited 7.3L PowerStroke that was donated to us by Ford because it was in a flood. The truck wouldn't move because the transmission was slipping so bad but after the saw dust it was doing burn outs in the parking lot

It didn't last very long but all we did was drop the trans pan, clean out the valve body, seal it back up, add fluid and dump more saw dust in and it was alive again.

Wrong.

Bands are worn, not much 'cheap and easy' except may an adjustment on the bands.

An automatic is all I know. It's a 2wd 91 F-1FixMe with a 302 V8 and an auto trans.

We dumped about four cups worth of very coarse sawdust in. That was for a diesel.

Might wanna scale it back a bit for the F-150 lol

Keep in mind that only kept it moving around for about a hour. A full weekend is highly doubtful.

You could try some Lucas to thicken up the fluid or drain and fill it wth John Deere Hy-gaurd hyd. oil, I run it in my C4 and it is slightly higher viscosity. I don't think I would put sawdust in it...lol

I would just do the lucas again, or trans flush.

I think its junk in the converter, and from what I've read the symptoms are.....

Before you try any of these bullshit fixes, please figure out what trans it is and report back. I can try and help you figure out the actual problem and probably fix it so it will last the race. Is it shifting through all gears? Taking off in first? Taking off in a higher gear? Ect.
