Only if they physically go to each FFL and copy the 4473's.

They physically go to each FFL multiple times a year anyway.

I have often wondered specifically, what happens when you buy a long gun. When you pass your back ground check after you fill out the paperwork. Has the government kept a file on what type of long gun, name serial number caliber etc that you purchased.

I understand years ago that they did not, now I do not really know.

And most FFLs would torch the building if they started making copies without just cause.

The FFL holds onto the 4473 form for 25yrds years, then they get destroyed.

If the FFL goes out of business, they surrender the 4473 forms to the BATFE.

The dehumidifier rod in my safe caught on fire a few months ago and burned up all of my guns and ammo, so I had to start over from scratch. Luckily, the fire was contained to the inside of the safe...so the rest of my house was spared.

Here is my new single-shot assault weapon...

I'm sure this will put me on some sort of crazy watch list, but I have a HUGE stockpile of ammo for it too...

When we bought the store here I delivered a truck load of forms to the ATF. My six foot bed with topper was full to the top. I really don't think anything gets destroyed.

Put those rocks in a bucket, and you'll have a high capacity assault magazine.

When the background check request is submitted to the FBI NICS department, no data about the firearm is given save for the type (handgun, long gun, or "other"). They do not receive or record information on the manufacturer, caliber, mag capacity, serial number, or anything else save for the above field.

So, the fears that people have of the ATF knowing what you're buying and whatnot are fairly misplaced. No such information is transmitted to the ATF at the time of purchase from an FFL holder.

Here are the ways that the government can link a gun with an owner:

- Michigan pistol registration, for both private or dealer sales
- ATF inspects 4473 sales records during a compliance inspection
- If someone buys more than 1 pistol w/in 5 business days, a Multiple Pistol Sales Report must be submitted to the National Tracing Center
- A firearm was used in a crime and the ATF submits a trace request to the FFL that sold the firearm.
- The FFL goes out of business and surrenders their 4473 forms

The ATF does not visit every FFL holder multiple times per year. They're way too understaffed to do that. They can do a compliance check whenever they want, but that's a fairly routine affair and it doesn't happen too often.

As an FFL holder, my experience with the local ATF agents has been wholly positive, believe it or not. There are some exceptions, but most of them are just doing their jobs to ensure that the FFL holders in their jurisdictions are complying with federal fireams laws.

It seams to me that their is far more information transfered. When ever their is a nut job with a gun attack, their are several details that come out regarding purchase location, purchaser etc that are revealed, that would not be possible under most circumstances. Obviously with a hand gun it is different. I am refering specifically to long gun purchases.

I assume, that their is reverse tracking starting with the manufacturer, by serial number to original FFL, so their would need to be a crime commited and the fire arm would need to be in hand to perform this search,

This thread and others really make me wonder how deep the tracking really goes.
