Dual batteries, yes you can tap off of a certain spot to get 12v.

I'm not saying it can't be done but I wasn't comfortable with it on this vehicle and owner will be happier not shifting it all the time.
You are right, I said that backwards, but on the cummins it is a simple gear drive powersteering/vacuum pump combo, nothing more. If it requires a varying rate of vaccum for shifting I don't know. I know they work, and never really measured it to figure out. But the transgo thing sounds cool too.

he has a cabin he built out in the sticks somewhere in canada. it is a ways off the main road so he uses this to get back there.

yea the vacuum varies to control the pressure in the trans. i found out the hard way on a fmvb in my 400, i didnt run a vacuum modulator so the pressure was always maxed out in it and it was blowing out valves and retainers pins and clips in the valve body. so i am a little gun shy on trying to rig something up on this. gonna use a baumann controller a custom torque converter built by precision, and a full rebuild on the trans with normal upgraded components.

I did get hydro pump moved, and mounted trans cooler, also got trans rebuilt and got new torque converter here. I got swamped at the shop with other things to do so haven't been able to work on it much in the last two weeks.

I know 4bt cummins are used in smaller heavy equipment and those systems are normally 24 volt. Why couldn't you just use a starter from one of those like this one http://www.amazon.com/Dresser-510B-D.../dp/B0081SBTRG ?

Cool project.

One possibility for trans control is the Rossler Little Black Box. I stumbled on it while looking for MVB for a 4L60E. I've never used one, but they offer for 4L60E and 4L80E. It's a plug-in manual controller, so you don't gut the trans, just manually control solenoids. But I'm guessing cost isn't big object.

I doubt it, unless you can talk the owner into taking it. If he does you can ride in the back box

well finally getting back on this project. time to get it out of my shop. recruited some help from my dad to hurry up and knock it out. all of the wiring is done including Ushift trans controller. all fuel and transmission lines done, all coolant lines done. serp belt figured out and alt mounted. most of the exhaust and turbo plumbing done, just gotta finish up the air cleaner and pipe and make some sort of box manifold to go from turbo intake to air cleaner pipe, tight fit between front of turbo and oil filter. made turbo relocation thingy mabob. hopefully fire the engine up this week. still got to build drive shafts but think we have them figured out.

Just a thought for your turbo intake from air cleaner clearance issue. The Cummins ISX uses a boot that I believe would fit into your location there (not sure that pipe dimensions would be the same). I can take a look in the shop tomorrow and see if I can come up with a part # for reference. I know that there are a few applications though that require a very tight turn from the air cleaner plumbing to the turbo.
