86 models had a electronic q-jet carb and electronic timing control for the ignition. thats about all they did. 87 is when they started TBI.

It was not an electronic q-jet, the carb had a solenoid that would divert 1/2 of the extra fuel pushed by the accelerator pump, otherwise it functioned as a standard q-jet. The box behind the dash controled the Electronic Spark Control - pulled the timing back when the engine knocked, and allowd the solenoid to be energised once the engine temp was up to 170*. Neither were necessary to allow the engine to run.

Can all that stuff be removed without affecting any gauges or whatever else?
