Default 2000 chevy van with the 4.3

my wife has a 2000 chevy conversion van and the past few days We try to start it and it just cranks and cranks and then finally tries to turn over. well yesterday and today it does this but it tries to fire over but doesnt and I have cranked it over to the point the battery is dead.

Once it does start it runs fine and starts right up until it sits over night.

It has gas, the battery was new in april.

I know it getting fuel( i can smell it faint fumes in the engine)

I have no idea where to start as I have never worked on vans, (dont know how to get to engine)

I looked on line and the Ignition control module seems to be the one thing that sounds like it could be, but not 100% sure

Sounds like the fuel pump is on it's way out. Not building enough pressure to start it cold. Not the first I seen do this. A fuel pressure gauge should tell you what's going on.

No distributor on this one. Coil on plug.

I have done my fair share of work on trucks and cars, and it acts like its not getting spark but then I will turn the key and it try's to fire( it kinda sounds like a diesel in the cold) and then nothing.

When this happened the other day i cranked and cranked and the battery died, I went out a hr later to "look around" and just for the hell of it I turned the key and it started right up, that is why i am so confused, as it is giving so many indications but not one solid thing.

It has come on and off a few times in the past month and it was running "ruff" to it to get scanned and they said it was a multiple misfire but nothing showed what was causing it. They the light went off one day and was running fine and now this

Check the amperage draw of the fuel pump with an oscilloscope

Idk where you got that idea but all current production 4.3 V6's have a distributor

It would've helped if he didn't change his post from 4.8 to 4.3 after I posted.

well I replaced the crank position sensor and I am getting fuel and spark, but will not turn over. I have not touched it in a few weeks and the last time I did I had the battery charged(its only 10 months old), well today after replacing the cps I tried to start it and it tried to fire a few times and then the battery went dead, only after 5-10 min of off and on cranking. Not a Constance turn the key and hold it type thing.

Could the battery need charging again since it sat in the cold, or is there something else I should be looking for? All fuses checked out ok.

Thanks

Rich

It was running and driving great before this happened, and right before it stopped turning over, it was running sluggish until it warmed up.

I am taking the battery in to have it recharged, and let the engine area dry out since it was in the snow and rain the past few weeks

Distributor gear will some times strip out especially at higher miles.

I didnt put a gauge on it,I was basing it on the fuel rail port, where you can press it and see if fuel comes out plus I can smell fuel after cranking it a few times

The 4.3 will not fire unless the oil pressure sensor tells it it has pressure. If the sensor is bad it will do exactly what you are saying. I had this happen on several of the 4.3 Astrovans at my old work. Just another idea.
