Default overdrive in 89 k3500?

Just bought a 1989 K3500 with a throttle body 5.7... it has a th400. . What overdrive will bolt in? 4l80e is computer controlled? It has 4.10 gears and runs 3000 ram at 60-65..

that will work if you don't plan on towing a lot. and you will need a different t case with 28 spline input

a 4l80e you going to need a pricy stand alone puter. have you considered a 5 spd swap or getting a newer truck?

how much are you planning on towing with it? if your going to keep it light a built 700r4 would work

Just one long trip, 500 miles one way, once a year. Otherwise local trips only

lots of bad info here. 700r4 is mechanical which requires no computer to operate. it uses a 27 spline output shaft. 4l60 was the name change in 1991 but no mechanical differences. 4l60e came out in 1993 and requires a computer to operate and if you wanted to use that it would require a new computer for the truck and a new electrical harness. There is no such thing as a 4l80 in a mechanical version. First appeared in 1991 there is only a 4l80E which requires a computer to operate. It has the same 32 spline output shaft as a th400 and transfer cases will interchange easily.

If i were you i would locate a 1991-93 4l80e from a same model truck with the same engine, get the computer and wiring harness and swap transmissions. It should be plug and play and the transmissions are very close to the same size so driveshaft modifications shouldn't be necessary.

They did not mate a 4L80; they went from TH400 to 4L80E.

IMO it'd be easeir to build a 700-R4, and use that with a new transfer case. You should be able to find them pretty cheap from a parts truck or junk yards. Better yet, find a blown 700-R4 and get it for next to nothing. A master rebuild kit with upgrades runs like $120 or something like that. For how much you tow, a built 700 would be perfect

Yep, i would go with 700 also, can be built tough as shit and no computer. Find a 700 with a tcase, cheap and plentiful.
