Im sure there would be some sort of issues about going from a canada title to a US title . There has to be some tax envolved . Export crap to deal with .

Its a bridge or tunnel away but also a country away .

Grumpy 1 enlighten us with your experience ??

They wanted the US EPA and DOT approved paperwork. I tried to get this from dealers and even called Chrysler who told me they knew what i was talking about but I was on my own.

So I told them at the border The jeep was for off road use only. They harassed me for over 3 hours trying to get me to not bring it in until i they finally gave in and stamped my 7501C papers.

There is no tax at the border but you will have to pay the usual 6% at the Secretary of states office as well as the usual transfer of title fee.

I am originally from Canada and I brought over my comanche and my YJ. Chrysler will not under any circumstance give you the letter of compliance unless it is a gift from an immediate relative or you are bringing the vehicle with you when you immigrate. The easiest way to do it although not the cheapest is to go through a registered importer and you can bring it over yourself. The registered importer will do all the paperwork and you will get a sticker from them saying it meets all US DOT requirements which pretty much all Canadian vehicles do. They send you a paper with a bar code on it and you just take it through the truck lines and they scan it and you go onto the registered importer. I had to use a registered importer for my Comanche but I lucked out and my dad signed over the YJ to me so I got the Letter from Chrysler, no registered importer needed. I have heard that the Embassader is easier to get vehicles across without the letter than the Tunnel. I could be wrong but that is what I heard. The guy I used for my Comanche was cool and he didn't need to keep the vehicle for a couple days to inspect it like alot of registered importers do. He just took a couple of pics and let me go on home and then a couple days later I got my paper with the stamp for the SOS. If anyone wants the company I used to get my comanche over PM and I will pass it on. He was the cheapest as well at $250. Most were $500 or more and kept the vehicle for a couple days to a week.

Grumpy was lucky he got through without the letter, so it is possible obviously but 3 hours! ACK!! My YJ took 15 minutes max and my Comanche took about the same with the registered importer to cross. I know others must have gone through this as well.

I called 2 or 3 local dealers and they all told me no dice. Wish i had the letter. The Crossing guards sucked ass and I know they kept me longer just to hassle me. Assholes !

If anyone has the name of a dealer that will help get the EPA,DOT paper work I would greatly appreciate it.

WRONG WRONG WONG!!!! Chrysler WILL NOT GIVE THE THE LETTER OF COMPLIANCE TO ANYONE WHO IS BUYING USED ACROSS THE BORDER. Trust me I went a few rounds with Chrysler on this including calling the dealerships and was told I have to contact Chrysler headquaters to get the letter. They will not give one unless you are bring the vehicle with you when you immigrate or it was giving as a gift from an immediate relative. This is something they just started doing a few years ago. If you can get through without it you are lucky end of story. They even gave me the eye with the paper from a registered importer. I have heard Ford and GM are easier to get the letter from but I KNOW that Chrysler will not.

Regardless it is sold so I guess it doesn't matter now! LOL!

Since I bought the YJ, I ought to jump in here w/ my experience...

going across was easy w/ a truck and trailer, told the lady what I was doing and got through :chiefwoohaw:

On the way back to the states, I got waived into the truck lane (semi's) , this sucked because it took an hour to get up to the booth. (still never got a straight answer wether I could have gone through the car lane)

This particular YJ was US made and exported to Canada and has a Canadian title. The VIN tells you it's from the US but the title does not say it and the booth guy didn't know.

It took a minute for the guy to grasp what I was doing
(bringing a US made vehicle back to the states for "parts" , that is the key to avoid tax and hassle)

He didn't even look at the title or bill of sale, he just waived me to inspection and told me to go into the customs office. once I walked the 1/4 mile from the lot to the office, I had almost another hour sunk into this adventure.

Once in the office and through the line, I explained to the customs officer what I was doing and he didn't know how to procede...after another 1/2 hour he finally came up with a vehicle import form for me to fill out. Then shift change happened before I could get back up to the guy...So another 1/2 hour went by before I finally got to a new guy who actually knew what the hell he was doing. He told me the form was not filled out properly, but he did know from the VIN it was a US vehicle...the form was $6 to process, but at the last minute, he just said "today's your lucky day" and ripped up the form and red stamped me out the door free and clear.

So, in the end, it took a lot of time, but I got through. I can not comment on the import of a Canadian made vehicle...
I will say, with the exception of the officer that got me through, the rest of the US customs guys are bums.

Well glad it worked out for ya. I had forgotten about the "parts vehicle" loophole even though you still had some issues it sounded like you lucked out. Seemed like a decent ride. I only commented from my experiece and what I was told by Chrysler headquarters who give the letter of compliance for DOT.

Hey, that's cool.
I probably would not have jumped on it if it were not a US made Jeep.
And for the money, it was a smoking deal...I've gone over it pretty good and it's down to needing a distributor or pcm to be running...

And for the record, Jeff (0007BOND) is a great guy, and I would deal w/ him again anytime...

I think mine was a major PITA since the one i got from Jeff was a Canadian vehicle.

And yeah it was great working with Jeff too. Now if he would find me a radiator all would be right as rain :)

Well I did just buy one of 0007s jeeps as he said. And Chrysler told me they could not give a letter of compliance only to new vehicles. But mine went really well. As long as the epa sticker from production is on the hood your good even without the letter. we spent 1 hour on the bridge and 3 minutes in the customs office. Filled out the form and told them we wanted to be able to drive this daily and title and plate and bla bla bla. Needless to say I am waiting for 0007 to let me know about The next jeep he is going to sell me. The jeep I got runs great had a little over heating prob but ended up the cooling fan was on backwards. Any wy I am happy and a great deal.
Thanks

Good deal guys I could never get a straight answer from the bridge as to what they needed. Sounds like it was easier than I was originally told. Either way it all worked out. I will keep that in mind if I can find a guy with a nice ride in my old canadian neighborhood

Since we hi jacked this thread i may as well post that we tried to plate the jeep i got from Jeff yesterday. The Canadian title had some shit on it like Not safe since it didn't have a safety inspection. The secretary of state made us have the vehicle inspected by the local PD. Once I got the papers signed the jumping through hoops was finally done.

Yeah that is one I really don't miss since I moved here to Michigan from Ontario was the safeties you needed to have to get plates on vehicles. It just means that it needs a new safety check ($30-40 last I checked) in ontario to get plated it really means nothing here at all. It doesn't mean it isn't safe just government bull to get more $ out of Ontario drivers. It needs to be done everytime the vehicle is sold unless it was already done within 30 days of you buying it. Anyway worked out for ya even with the headache so
