Another auto title legal question.

Yeah I know title stuff has been beaten to death here a multitude of ways but I don't think this has been asked.

From a YJ I parted out all I have left is the hood, windshield frame and title. Tub has been scrapped along with the frame, went in as sheet metal so no title was required to scrap.

So I guess what I'm wondering is if its illegal to sell the windshield frame and title together to someone building a jeep from pieces? Technically its all that's left of the jeep, and I'm not tampering with the VIN plate by removing it.

Any ideas? or anyone better at searching for the right answer lol?

The title goes with the frame on framed vehicles. With unibody vehicles the title goes with the body. When frames get cut into pieces the scrap yard may not know what it is so you may get rid of it and still end up with the title.

Your thinking is common and most people think the title goes with the cab. I would just shred the title if I was you. Your name is on it so anything that may be done illegally with it going forward will always have a trail back to you.

That's kinda funny, it's completely backwards from how the yards around me operate. I can take in completely together rolling frames with no questions at all or title required, but if they think they see a single piece of cut up body they want a title.

I finally convinced the one yard that me bringing in rotted to hell stripped out jeep tubs shouldn't require a title.

Thanks for the info.

Why would the title go with the frame when there are 2 vin tags on the body? I too have had the issue with bodys being scrapped. If it looks like a car/jeep/truck the scrap yard wants a title. Never had any questions about just bring in a rolling chassis with out titles.

Since there is a VIN tag on the tub as well, I don't think this is legal.

My rule of thumb is always - If you have to ask, it's probably illegal.
