Default Helping the homeless?

I dont live in the best part of town, their are quite a few homeless people around my part. I have a large uneven driveway thats part brick, grass, gravel and cement. I saw a guy walking by pushing a bike with a snow shovel, I offered him 10 bucks to shovel the whole drive way and the steps. Him and his friend tried for 20 but settled for 10. I gave them a tupperware with fudge and cookies in it also. I sorta feel like I am taking advantage of them. They seemed happy so I guess it's alright. I didn't understand a word they were saying besides beer or money haha. Anyone see an issue with doing this? I mean they stand on a corner for a handout all the time, whats wrong with asking them to work for it?

I see no problem with it, but I wouldn't really want them around.....then again I wouldn't want to live there either so I guess you're probably used to it.

I say its fine, its better than a straight up handout IMO. However its really about what kind of people these are, because most people with nothing to lose will risk everything, IE breaking into your house for your stuff. With that said my coworker who use to live in lansing a few years ago said that he use to have people like that to help with yard work and also he use to feed them from time to time and they even helped chase someone else away that was trying to break into his house, almost like a bum security. But IMO its risky shit trying to figure out if a homeless person is a "good" person or not.

An old friend used to give his returnables to a guy that I think was homeless and he appreciated it but then when my friend was not home he would go in his backyard and just take them. That was the end of that.

Another friend of mine has a 2002 Crewcab F-350 Diesel, while we were getting on 75 at 8 mile there was a guy sitting on a bucket with a sign asking for money. He started to swerve in the homeless guys direction, he got off that bucket real fast and started to run. He straightened the truck out and we continued on our way laughing our asses off.

I don't see anything wrong with helping people. You just have to be smart about it. Sounds like you were.

I lived in E. Lansing and worked in Lansing for quite a while and would get some homeless people asking for money and that kind of stuff. One time we were at a gas station and one homeless guy was screaming at the other guy for picking 'his' trash cans. I gave him a ride to Wendy's and bought him dinner. He was a nice guy.

The other time we had a guy come up to our ministry house when I was getting my EX500 running and (hindsight would dictate) he defiantly was looking to play us for money. Our Campus minister had actually told us about him. He comes around every 5 or 6 years (when there are new students in the houses that don't know better). We took him to the bus station (which was oddly closed) because he needed to get to New York. I wanted to buy him a ticket but couldn't so we drove around a little. I eventually gave him some cash (which you should never do). He started one of his 'routines' on me and I though it sounded pretty familiar (from stories my campus minister told me) so we parted ways. He wasn't mean, but you could tell he knew what he was doing.

To each their own but I don't think you did wrong by "hiring" them to do a job. Some of them will take advantage if they can while others will be loyal to those who help them out. I see no point in harassing the homeless. Why the fukc would someone think of it as fun to make someone's life more stressful and miserable. Can you imagine being in their shoes? Some of them got in their position by making bad decision no doubt but there is no way to tell how they got where they are. You would be amazed what a little kindness will do. They are PEOPLE just like me and you. Treat them as such!!!

Phuck the homeless! 99.99% of those people are that way because they have made poor life choices.

In Kalamazoo my roommates and I would give empties to the bums that walked around. Leave them outside even in a container. We no longer do this as they feel they are entitled to.them every week. Even knock on our door at 2 a.m. told them to get the fawk out and not.come.back.

Saw a woman standing at an intersection earlier today begging for money. Her sign said she was pregnant and needed money. I thought to myself, wtf, you have no money, no job and you're standing on the side of the road begging for money, last I knew pregnancy was voluntary unless someone raped you and if so then there is help available. Get the fukc off the side of the road and go find a job.

When I was in India the rule was treat them as you would a dog or a bird. You treat one nice and they will beat a path to where you are standing. They send the little children first to see if you are going to help out a child, then they send all the children.

I treat all the 'homeless' the same way by me. I don't give them any money. If they can rock brand new Carhartt, fresh clothes and go back to their 300k homes, then they don't need my help.
