Just a heads up to people who don't browse that site often.

For those who don't use VV's maps, you're really missing out. We can randomly show up at any trail head and immediately find our way to points of interest.. It's great.

Our maps will show that, if you have the combined Snow and ORV maps, with both maps enabled (don't recommend doing that, but it would show you).

The trails themselves are marked on the ground:
Orange Diamond = Snowmobile
Orange Triangle = ORV
If you see both, it's open to both (exceptions below).

Most snowmobilers are unfamiliar with the ORV system though, especially the markers.

Designated ORV Route is open to ORVs year around on State Land unless the DNR has a Director's Order closing it to wheeled vehicles (few ORV Routes in the west end of the UP are like this).
On USFS land, snowmobile trails are generally closed to wheeled motorized in the winter. Meadows, Bull Gap, Huron Trail - just the parts that are snowmobile trails.

Good product, but unless things have changed from my understanding they are only Gramin compatible. Would be great if they had GPX files so they can be used on other devices.

Default Maps

I have this map program on my gps. Very handy to find trails or quick ways back to the truck via roads when it gets late. However on my GPS iit just shows a straight line from my present local to my destination if I try to route while displaying the trail maps. Is there a model of GPS that might hi light my route on the trails? Or is this as good as it gets?

There are a couple older units that don't autoroute, but I suspect yours is not one of those.

Here's the "tricks" to get it to autoroute, note that this is default behavior for most all units, but easy to change and cause it to do off-road routing like yours is trying to do.

1. GPS should be in automotive/driving mode.
2. Avoidances should be OFF except for Toll Roads.
3. If your GPS asks "on road or off-road" choose On Road. If you chose off-road previously, you'll have to change it in the Routing/Navigation settings in the Main Menu (varies by model).
4. If your model has profiles that you can change for each activity, you may just need to switch to the Automotive Profile to correct all of the settings (I've had a couple that no matter what, would not work until we did this). You can then customize the settings from there to suit your preference.

Setup with screen shots here: http://www.vvmapping.com/help/routingSetup.html

What model do you have? I can give specific instructions.

I've been meaning to look into updating my maps (they are a few years old). I want to see what it will cost etc..

Another question, is it worth updating my nuvi 500?? I have not kept up on any of this stuff, but my garmin has been good to me........
