I can't answer you question but I find that Gander Mtn. is always over priced, on everything. Also the staff at the local store is less than informed and mostly rude. I only go in there to window shop.

I found meijer to be even cheaper. I was going to buy some bulk 45 acp but the absolute cheapest I could find was only going to save me $20 over 1500 rounds, or about 50 rounds extra. The bulk stuff was no name either.

Cheaper Than Dirt is my friend. I spent $800 on ammo there 2 months ago. Bring on the apocalypse.

Volume and excellent negotiators. The suppliers can make the ammunition less expensively when the volumes are high enough to have dedicated equipment to make it on (including assembly equipment). They can also negotiate large-volume raw material costs, sometimes cutting out the middle man and going directly to the mills.

It isn't tough to figure out what the cost of a product should be so Walmart goes to potential suppliers with a price in hand and say "take it or leave it".

And ammo is lost leader meaning it gets you in the door and maybe spend more.

I buy my 40 and 9mm from Great Lakes Ammo if you buy 1,000 rounds on a group buy its stupid cheap, and reloaded locally. Last group by they did 9mm $185/1000 rounds, 40S&W $210/1000 rounds, .45ACP 295/1000 rounds.

After shipping it is the exact same price for new 45 acp from meijer then great lakes ammo sells reloads, only problem is I can't buy 1,000 rounds from meijer in one trip.
Edit: And that is for the sale price, not the regular price from Great lakes ammo.

my question is, how much is enough.

I feel that we are on the verge of ammo purchase tracking, along with every thing else.

If you stopped target shooting for the fun of it, how much would you really need to have for hunting etc to get you by for 30 years, that is the question,

I am not sure that reloading equipment would be any less likely to be scrutinized, when it comes to the consumables, I.E. powder primers casings etc.

I heard a comment on Mike Church this morning that 3 1/2 years worth of ammunition has been sold in the past few days.
