Default Firearms in Schools?

I would love to have armed guard(s) in my grandkids' schools. Maybe a retired cop or retired military person.
I'd like to know even some of the teachers are armed.
I'd love to see an ID check on everyone entering the building.

This seems like an easy thing to do, only one way in and have security at that door.

Agree with all the above. An armed guard would be quite effective. If the funding for an armed guard isnt there (because that argument will be made), a weapon should be on location. Schools are required to have fire protection, defibrillators, first aide kits, nothing wrong with requiring them to have and emergency "assault" rifle and well trained personnel to handle the weapon.

I think what you are missing is that the person will likely end up working there until they retire so you will have Paul Blart, mall cop 350 lbs wandering around the school.

If they put a maximum 5 year assignment on the job and pay 100,000 per year I would feel like there was some level of protection added, however most people will not be reliable guards to protect kids from a gun man, and you will not get a properly qualified person for 10.50 per hour. So they will have to vote in a millage increase to pay for it, so when your property taxes are being asked to be raised will you say yes or no on the ballott?

I'm all for it. We have armed guards at court houses, some college's, banks, pro sports arenas, many stores, etc. Seems logical to put as much effort into protecting our kids.

I fully agree with this statement; "the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun".

At my kids school, during the school day there is only one door you can get in which goes to the office.
You have to be buzzed into the office for an ID check, and then buzzed out of the office to go either outside or into the school.

Should be like that at every school in this country. And at that door is where you have a police officer at every school. Not enough money to pay for it? Have a millage vote to fund it. Any politician who doesn't support it should be voted out of office, and any voter who complains should be fucking ashamed of themselves.

If you ask me its time for guards..while shootings in schools are tragic, they are NOT the norm, not even close. More people are killed doing everyday things than die of gun fire. However, no child should have to worry about being safe. You take the guns from people then these assholes will show up with knives, its already happend in other parts of the world. I'm not sure how to pay for it, but I think its the right direction we need to go

Obviously we haven't heard all the truth but I believe Sandy Hook had this policy. If so, it didn't do much good.

and you won't, the media doesn't care about the truth...they care about ratings, and nothing gets ratings better than fear...in reality the media should be charged with terrorism....defination of terrorism-the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government or civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

I am always surprised by the lax security in our district. Although you have to be buzzed in, once in the door you are free to move through the building. The office staff cannot see you or control your movement after they hit the door buzzer. Never been asked for ID to get in the door.

We mandate crazy safety measure for our cars that cost us millions every year to save a handful of lives in traffic crashes, but we don't spend anywhere near that to save a handful of lives in our schools. Something wrong with that formula. I am going to take the opportunity to meet my Board of Education next month...should have done it years ago but no time like the present.

It was nice back in the early 80s when my elementary school doors were all propped open in the spring, and there was never anything to worry about.

same here, i think the teachers should be side armed and provided with the training and weapon.

I'm rather curious, has anyone ever attacked a parochial school?

Why not just allow people to legally carry in schools who are legal to carry everywhere else? I am all for having armed security, but why disarm the staff and parents when they come into the school? It would cost nothing extra to simply allow the people who are already there to protect our children more effectively.
Through this you would also have a possibility of having hundreds of armed guards in a single school, rather than one.

I'm not sure about schools out here but where i went to school, the local police department had 1 officer assigned to our school everyday. He was always walking around the building with either the VP or one of the teachers who had hall duty. My high school was only 1 level and a simple rectangular design. you could run from one end to the other in less then a minute if you had to. he also parked his car right out front where it could be seen.

For what someone said about 1 door entry. every school has multiple entry doors. A locked door only stops an honest criminal. what about some nut who walks by the windows and opens fire from the outside of the building? Not much can be done about that scenario.
