I couldn't watch all of that... but it looks like he's just installing boxee and/or xbmc?

those are (or were) two of the most common apps used to control an HTPC *Shrug*

What is it on Apple TV you can't get through Amazon Prime, Netflix, or Hulu Plus with a compatible Blu-Ray player?

So you're paying for the hardware and then have to pay for what shows/movies you buy. I'm not seeing the benefit, especially if you already have an internet connected Blu-Ray player.

dingdingding!

You can do a lot of this as well the the appropriate app on your phone.

I use the HDMI on my phone and stream netflix when I'm on the road.

AppleTV has NetFlix... not sure about Hulu or Amazon.

AppleTV is around $100, which is what many NetFlix capable boxes cost.

AppleTV can be hacked to run XBMC.

AppleTV can do AirPlay mirroring and other fun "Apple-only" things.

It's not so much what AppleTV does over everything else... it's just what does AppleTV do - many of the same things as everything else. If you have devices that do the same thing already, it's not for you.

My tivo can be controlled by an ipad, maybe other devices. And it does all the other same netflix, amazon, hulu plus, etc features and it has a usuable interface unlike the comcast dvr.

A Blu-Ray player costs $100, plays music CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, can run Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix.

Apple is the master of Kool-aid.

But a BluRay player can't be a media PC or do AirPlay.

Same shit I've been saying all along. If you can't keep all of these things straight in your head, perhaps you should bow out of this thread. Pull your head out of your ass and think of this without your animosity against Apple.

If you're looking for a device that does these things, consider an Apple TV - it's a cheap media PC/NetFlix/Hulu/AirPlay box. If you already have most of these things, and you don't really need AirPlay or a media PC, then it's not for you. This is pretty fucking simple.

Can't believe you don't already have one.

Ours is used to stream iTunes (either through it or from the laptop) through the home theater.
Play videos from computer. Watch photos in iPhoto (65" Plasma makes sharing the last trip pretty cool). Watch all those videos you take with the iPhone on a real screen.
Video mirror off the desktop so TheWife can look at crap online with you without leaning over your shoulder.
NetFlix. YouTube, etc. We don't use the Blue Ray player for NetFlix (never did, never use the dang thing). Used to use the Wii for it, but that's a pain in the rear comparatively.

If you have iTunes Match, all of your tunes are available directly through the ATV; same for videos, I believe.

Kind of like an iPad or iPod Touch - what would you ever use one of THOSE for, until you actually use one.

But a PC or laptop can, which most of us already own.

Like I said, Apple is the master of taking shit already out there and regurgitating it into something else then convincing everyone it's the next best thing.

Yea, but most people don't have one connected to their tv. And those don't have a remote controllable interface unless you connect an IR sensor and use something like Xbmc. And they don't cost $100.

I've been doing media pc's for a while, Apple TV is a great value, whether you hate apple or not.

I don't hate Apple. They package things in a way that consumers go nuts for. They create a market within markets for things that already exist, just in a different "color."

I just personally don't see a need for their products when everything I own (and what most people already own but don't go through the trouble to explore how to use) can do what Apple products already do, or typically what I've found, do much better.

Don't take my word for it. Google Xbmc and raspberry pi or Apple TV. 2 very desirable media pcs that are cheap and do everything. $100 is a cheap media pc.

Apple doesn't invent anything, they just take existing tech and make it easy enough for non-tech people to use.

Just recieved an Apple tv generation 3 for christmas. It is pretty cool. Like others have said, the big plus is airplay mirroring. I can mirror my sceen off my ipad. The biggest bonus is, my mom is a comcast subscriber, so I created a email address under her account. This allows me to have access at my home to alot of shows, including ON Demand, all you have to do is download the xfinity remote and sign in (you have to have a iphone or ipad to mirror to the apple tv for this to work). Also, they are suppose to release a jailbreak for the 3rd generation in the next week.
