Default Haggling...a lost art.

Ok, here's my rant.

I'm terrible at haggling but what's with all the people that jump out and ask, "What's your bottom dollar?"

As if I'm going to tell you...

I just reverse the question. "How much money do you have?" or "What's the most you're willing to pay?"

If you don't want to haggle then just pay the asking price.

Every idiot thinks he's mr. Negotiator nowadays.

Like offering 10% of asking price is going to get you far.

My bottom dollar is 10% higher than my asking price. It clears out the tire kickers.

"I have cash!" seems to be another way of bartering without regard to the actual price.

So. You have cash. So do I.

Go get a loan, cashier check, a will from your dead relative. I do not care. This is the price I am selling it for.

I am an awful negotiator and haggler. That's how I ended up joining the Marine Corps - I just couldn't say no to the recruiter!

Whenever we have a large purchase to make (appliances, furniture, car...) we send my wife's father. He was the CFO at a large chemical company before he retired and lives for that kind of thing.

Don't say that, they'll take you up on it. Unless you have room for them.

I have seen a lot of this, but I've also seen idiots the total opposite way, posting a price as $xxx OBO, then being offended when offered 10% less when the item was not nearly as nice as advertised to begin with, or their price was close to an in store with warranty price.

I'm not a fan of haggling unless the price is rediculous.

I have bought 2 different items off the forum in the last 2 weeks. In both cases, after looking at the product, I felt the seller was asking a fair price so I told them I'll pay their asking price. Stupid on my part? Maybe, but I'm still a believer in being fair and living by the Golden rule.

I just bought a Dishwasher from ABC warehouse asking price was 475.99. After negotiating I got it out the door for 385.00 with a 5 year warranty. Tax was included. Negotiating was worth the 100+ dollars I saved.

Those guys would sell their mothers for a commission check. ABC is a great place to haggle.

My father never pays asking price. My first jeep started at 8500, I walked away paying 5300 and bb was 9000. Nothing was wrong with it. I bring my dad along for big purchases. He is also a cheap bastard. He goes garbage picking and this one year in particular we were sent 5 or 6 new box fans after he junk picked broken ones only to call the manufacturer and bitch: they just sent him new ones!

I'll also pay asking if it seems worth it to me. All someone has to do is say no, nothing to be mad about. I won't low ball, only offer what I feel is fair.

I ask if they had any offers yet, to see what won't buy it or how firm they are on price.

I'll price stuff higher on CL because I know they'll dicker. I'll come down and they'll think they stole it. I make a couple bucks off it and everyone's happy. They want to low ball me, I tell them to look at it then low ball.
